网上有很多网络词典，作为参考。慎重起见，笔者到图书馆查了两部词典。

一部是《美国学院词典》这部词典第一版是1947年。笔者阅读的是1965年版本。

笔者把上面翻译成中文是：

任意：形容词 1.受个体意志或评断支配; 任意。 2反复无常; 不确定; 不合情理： 一个任意解释。 3 不受法律控制; 使用或滥用无限的力量; 专制; 强横; 一个任意政府。 arbitrarily副词。arbitrariness 名词。

另一部更完整。这部词典第一版是1983年。笔者阅读的是1989年版本。
