今天是馬丁·路德·金誕辰日（實為1月15日，但紀念日定為每年一月第三個周一），美國的全國紀念日。馬丁·路德·金的個人生活長期被“政治正確”神化和綁架，任何不敬的言論都有可能被指責為種族偏見，但近年來他的不光彩的另一面被逐漸曝光。

曝光的主要是馬丁·路德·金混亂的婚外性生活，他被他的民權運動戰友們形容為“性上癮者” 。馬丁·路德·金本人毫不忌諱這個稱號，反而受之坦然。他對他的一位戰友說：“我一個月25到27天都不在家，婚外性交是減輕壓力的一種方式！”

傑奎琳.肯尼迪回憶道，肯尼迪總統親口告訴她，1963年8月當馬丁·路德·金在華盛頓組織 “March on Washington”大遊行期間，曾試圖私下組織一次淫亂聚會，“he was calling up all these girls and arranging for a party of men and women, I mean, sort of an orgy in the hotel, and everything"。

包括2014年出品的影片《Selma》都沒有迴避馬丁·路德·金的性癮描述，看來馬丁·路德·金生前是個卡薩諾瓦(Casanova，意大利18世紀享譽歐洲的大情聖，追尋女色的風流男人)，是個鐵板釘釘的事實，連馬丁·路德·金的家屬子女都沒有否認。

但少為人知的還有馬丁·路德·金的剽竊行為。有人指出他那個著名的”我有一個夢“（I have a dream）演講，抄襲了另一個黑人律師Archibald J. Carey, Jr. 的演講。請比較，Carey的演講詞是這樣的：

That’s exactly what we mean –

from every mountain side, let freedom ring

not only from the Green Mountains and White Mountains of Vermont and New Hampshire; not only from the Catskills of New York; but from the Ozarks in Arkansas, from the Stone Mountain in Georgia, from the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia

let it ring，not only for the minorities of the United States, but for the disinherited of all the earth–may the Republican Party, under God, from every mountainside, let freedom ring!

馬丁·路德·金的演講詞是這樣的：

如果說以上算不上抄襲或者抄襲不算很明顯的話，那馬丁·路德·金的博士論文則問題大了。

1985年馬丁·路德·金的夫人將丈夫的遺稿捐給了斯坦福大學。研究人員發現，馬丁·路德·金在波士頓大學的博士論文"A Comparison of the Conception of God in the Thinking of Paul Tillich and Henry Nelson Wieman”，引用了大量的另一位波士頓大學博士生Jack Boozer的文章，而未註明出處。波士頓大學隨後展開了自己的調查，結果發現馬丁·路德·金在他的博士論文中，引用了多名作者的文章而未註明出處，Jack Boozer只是其中之一。

斯坦福大學King Papers Project負責人Clayborne Carson說，“文字抄襲從他的早年文稿到博士論文，隨處可見。這一模式在他一生的演講和布道中也很明顯。”

斯坦福大學King Papers Project民權歷史學家Ralph E. Luker發現，馬丁·路德·金另一文章“The Chief Characteristics and Doctrines of Mahayana Buddhism”幾乎原文照抄原作者。Ralph E. Luker說，“（馬丁·路德·金）的學術道路越長，他的這種借用別人的語言又不註明出處的傾向越明顯。所以，他的博士論文抄襲行為似乎是這種長期習慣的結果。”

1991年《美國歷史雜誌》引用King Papers Project的研究人員的話說，“抄襲是馬丁·路德·金幾乎所有學術論文的特點”（plagiarism was a general pattern evident in nearly all of his [King’s] academic writings）。

但美國的新聞媒體在“政治正確”面前集體選擇了噤聲，儘管他們都知道真相。直到馬丁·路德·金遭暗殺幾乎二十年以後，先是英國報紙然後是美國報紙才逐漸披露了馬丁·路德·金的抄襲醜聞，但又異口同聲地說，馬丁·路德·金仍然是個偉大的人物。

波士頓大學曾考慮取消馬丁·路德·金的博士學位，但最後一刻還是打消了這一念頭。只是在學校圖書館收藏的馬丁·路德·金的博士論文裡附加了一份說明，指出論文在哪裡哪裡缺少了引號和原文出處。

馬丁·路德·金的性醜聞加上抄襲醜聞，是事實，但瑕不掩瑜。我們紀念他，是因為他在人權領域中的貢獻，他比其他人更勇敢更有號召力也更有成效，他也為此付出了生命的代價。我們紀念他，是因為他是個普通人但做了不普通的事，而不是因為他是個聖人。We remember him as a man, not a saint。
