李敦白被关押在秦城监狱时：
“江青被关进秦城监狱后，正好在我对面的牢房，她的声音我听得清清楚楚。”
“ 又过了几个星期，有一天我听见有个女人在叫，声音似乎是从院子那边， 正对我的牢房里传来。这个声音很熟悉，又高又尖，半哭地叫道：“噢，毛 主席！噢，毛主席！我会永远对你忠心不二！”
那哭声就像是中国葬礼上的职业送葬者。“为了你，我不在乎我得受什么苦。 噢，真正的革命者在世界上要受怎样的苦呀！同志们，别怀疑，最后的胜利 一定是我们的！”这个声音我有九年没听到了，但是我很肯定就是她，千真 万确。是江青。
作为一代伟人毛泽东的妻子，江青虽然尽力保持更文雅的谈吐，但她讲话时忽 高忽低的鼻音和上海口音，却仍然存在。现在，她又把她做政治演说时惯用的 那一套戏剧化音调使出来。
“我们共产党人是不怕别人咒骂的，”她悲泣道，“我们是在诅咒和打击下出 生、成长、兴旺的。”她是在引用毛泽东在延安时的讲话。”

On the Tiananmen Gate on May Day, 1967:
A few minutes later, I noticed that Mao had not yet returned to the parapet. I strolled back to the rest area and what I saw startled me. Mao was sitting in one of the chairs that faced west, alone and looking miserable. His face was charged with such hatred and despair that I stopped where I was. I was standing eight or ten yards away from him, with only a ceremonial guard between us. He looked at me without seeing me. His face was puffy —— puffy eyes, puffy cheeks, puffy skin. He looked old, but that wasn't what held me in amazement. It was the look of abject despair, something I had never for an instant seen cross his face before.
Why? What was it about? What was causing his distress? Was it that in his mid-seventies he was seeing the danger that his empire might be torn apart by the torrent he had unleashed and hurled against his foes? Whatever it was, it was more than enougn to frighten me out of any idea of approaching and speaking with him.

为什么？ 究竟是为什么？ 是什么原因让他如此忧伤？古稀之年 的他是不是预卜到，他的国家会被自己释放出来对付敌人的洪流 淹没，而危在旦夕呢？
不管是什么原因， 他的样子实在太过吓人，我一下子 打消了上前说话的念头。”
1967年5月1日天安门上，国际共产主义战士、中国共产党党员 Sidney Rittenberg 李敦白同志三生有幸、独自一人、距离三 米、亲眼目睹超前四年多 —— 1971年9月12日夜晚，毛泽东 独守人大会堂118厅 —— 策划于密室、点火于未然、发怒、发 威、发狠时 —— 脸上同样太过吓人的表情。
