李敦白被關押在秦城監獄時：
“江青被關進秦城監獄後，正好在我對面的牢房，她的聲音我聽得清清楚楚。”
“ 又過了幾個星期，有一天我聽見有個女人在叫，聲音似乎是從院子那邊， 正對我的牢房裡傳來。這個聲音很熟悉，又高又尖，半哭地叫道：“噢，毛 主席！噢，毛主席！我會永遠對你忠心不二！”
那哭聲就像是中國葬禮上的職業送葬者。“為了你，我不在乎我得受什麼苦。 噢，真正的革命者在世界上要受怎樣的苦呀！同志們，別懷疑，最後的勝利 一定是我們的！”這個聲音我有九年沒聽到了，但是我很肯定就是她，千真 萬確。是江青。
作為一代偉人毛澤東的妻子，江青雖然盡力保持更文雅的談吐，但她講話時忽 高忽低的鼻音和上海口音，卻仍然存在。現在，她又把她做政治演說時慣用的 那一套戲劇化音調使出來。
“我們共產黨人是不怕別人咒罵的，”她悲泣道，“我們是在詛咒和打擊下出 生、成長、興旺的。”她是在引用毛澤東在延安時的講話。”

On the Tiananmen Gate on May Day, 1967:
A few minutes later, I noticed that Mao had not yet returned to the parapet. I strolled back to the rest area and what I saw startled me. Mao was sitting in one of the chairs that faced west, alone and looking miserable. His face was charged with such hatred and despair that I stopped where I was. I was standing eight or ten yards away from him, with only a ceremonial guard between us. He looked at me without seeing me. His face was puffy —— puffy eyes, puffy cheeks, puffy skin. He looked old, but that wasn't what held me in amazement. It was the look of abject despair, something I had never for an instant seen cross his face before.
Why? What was it about? What was causing his distress? Was it that in his mid-seventies he was seeing the danger that his empire might be torn apart by the torrent he had unleashed and hurled against his foes? Whatever it was, it was more than enougn to frighten me out of any idea of approaching and speaking with him.

我站在離他八或十碼遠的地方，中間只隔着一個例行公事的武裝 警衛，他眼睛對着我，卻像沒看到我。他的臉一片浮腫，眼睛、 臉頰皮膚都腫了起來。他看起來很蒼老，但這倒不令我吃驚。令 我驚異的，是他臉上那種可憐的絕望神情， 那是我從不在他臉上 看到過的。
為什麼？ 究竟是為什麼？ 是什麼原因讓他如此憂傷？古稀之年 的他是不是預卜到，他的國家會被自己釋放出來對付敵人的洪流 淹沒，而危在旦夕呢？
不管是什麼原因， 他的樣子實在太過嚇人，我一下子 打消了上前說話的念頭。”
1967年5月1日天安門上，國際共產主義戰士、中國共產黨黨員 Sidney Rittenberg 李敦白同志三生有幸、獨自一人、距離三 米、親眼目睹超前四年多 —— 1971年9月12日夜晚，毛澤東 獨守人大會堂118廳 —— 策劃於密室、點火於未然、發怒、發 威、發狠時 —— 臉上同樣太過嚇人的表情。
