Please find comments for today from a friend of mine, Marc A. whom I grew up with in the mid-west and who lives in Ashkelon, Israel with his wife Galit and 3 children.
I think his words, for those of us like you and I who are not only committed
to effective Governmental changes, but also very much committed to
helping people, opens the door to understanding what a family\'s life
is really like when enduring Rocket Attacks or other Security issues
as he and his family as so many others are today.
Pictures, when possible, do not convey the below I think.

Prologue: 9:22 am Monday morning December 29th Just as I was getting ready to hit the send button on the email below, the sirens came on. Its kind of a blur as I try to recall the past minute. I rush out from the shelter (also the computer room) to get the boys from the living room (4 and 5) into the shelter, and then I run upstairs in a panic to get the baby who should be in bed with Galit. Galit starts running down and shouts \"where is the baby\", and then I remember that the baby was downstairs in his playpen, so I\'m running back down - grab the baby and run into the shelter. Galit isn\'t as fast down the stairs as I am, so she doesn\'t make it into the shelter before we hear the loud boom. Maybe we have 20 seconds, I think less - you do the best you can. Our goal is to first make sure the kids are inside the shelter. Right after the boom, Galit\'s sister-in-law calls and says it was very very close to their home, as they felt it from inside of their shelter. Another day in Ashkelon under fire begins.
Backing up . . .
8:30 am Monday December 29th - Ashkelon: I just wanted to let those of you that have called and sent emails (and those that have offered us to come to their homes in the north), and those that are following the news and wondering how we are doing that we are basically okay here. Of course we have had to dash in to the shelter room many times lately (or just hit the ground with baby and all the kids when we are driving in the car and the sirens go off). We have moved the kids beds into shelter room, as 15-20 seconds is not enough time to pick them up and run down the stairs in the middle of the night. But this is nothing new, and thats really the point. As an example, we were at my nephew\'s first birthday party about a month ago here in Ashkelon (during the so called \"cease fire\"), and there was a warning siren followed by a rocket landing in the south of town, and 22 of us had to quickly pack in to the shelter room. The linked video ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I03UsaNicyA ) captures just the beginning of the panic that sets in as everyone (babies included) starts to scramble. My brother-in-law was making a video of the birthday party and it continued to record when he started to run. I pulled a few short clips out of the birthday video that are most relevant.
This attack from a month back is just one of the events that finally led to Israel\'s decision to once and for all take steps to bring quiet to its southern communities (Operation Solid Lead). A decision long overdue, especially in the eyes of the residents of Sderot, who have been living with daily rocket attacks on their town for almost eight years, many of those attacks causing death and injuries (fourteen dead and hundreds seriously wounded) with significant destruction of homes and property. And lets not forget Israel\'s total withdrawal from Gaza in 2005, which only led to an increasing pace of rocket fire from Gaza. We in Ashkelon are relative newcomers to this terror as we only entered rocket range starting last March. And its no surprise what Hamas in Gaza has been doing during the \"cease fire\" - stockpiling even longer range weapons as their rockets are now capable of reaching Ashdod (the next big town north of Ashkelon), with several landing there yesterday.
Its true that Hamas and other militant Palestinian groups in Gaza have not \"yet\" succeeded to kill \"huge\" numbers of Israelis with their indiscriminate rocket fire into southern Israel, so Israel\'s critics will say this battle is too lopsided and Israel must stop its operation. But the Palestinians need to be judged by \"intent\" and not \"results\". Every single rocket is meant to kill. If a rocket lands in the middle of a group it will kill every single person there - we saw it happen in the north in 2006, with one rocket killing twelve people and another killing eight (the same size rockets as those landing in Ashkelon). Consider the number of potential dead as Hamas continues to lob these things into the more populated areas such as Ashkelon and Ashdod, and you can understand the chilling consequences.
The bottom line is that those who want to help Israel need to do all they can to make sure that the US and others don\'t start pressuring Israel to stop before Israel finishes the job. Otherwise, this story will just be repeated again, only the missiles will keep getting larger and longer range, and eventually, Hamas in the south will reach the military level of Hizbullah in the north, with all of Israel\'s citizens potentially coming under rocket barrage from both north and south. But for Sderot, it will just be more of the same. For the sake of those 20,000 brave people, eight years of rocket attacks is enough. This must stop, and only Israel\'s military can stop it.
I think the blog I wrote last March is still relevant today if you want to review the history of this conflict from my family\'s perspective: http://ashkelon-under-fire.blogspot.com/ The security situation is essentially the same for us as it was then although since we moved into a larger house, it takes more time to get to the shelter.
We hope your holidays were enjoyable and wish you a Happy New Year. Marc, Galit, Ishai, Yoad and Yahav.
Epilogue: Its now 10:13am and a siren is going off. We had a siren about 10:00am, and that time we all made it into shelter room. Then another at 10:07am. We are just going to camp out here for a while, its not worth the running in and out. After this last one, I took the chance and opened the metal window for two seconds to finally toss out Yahav\'s poopy diaper. We try to decide how close the impacts are by the loudness of the booms. So far this morning nothing has been closer than a mile to our home. The bad and sad news is that the Grad (Katyusha) rocket that hit Ashkelon at 9:22am killed a construction worker at a library that is being built, and injured 13 others. Its ironic that the worker they killed was an Israeli Arab, and it just shows how indiscriminate their attacks on our civilian population are, versus the huge effort the Israeli army makes at hitting only specific military oriented targets, which Hamas by design weave into Gaza\'s civilian population.
