1912年，这位毕业于哥伦比亚大学的建筑师因慕名投奔爱马面粉厂(Phillips Mill)业主——美国久负盛誉的印象派风景画家勇将·高个子·莱思罗普(William L. Lathrop)而由纽约城搬到新希望镇，并从此改行做了艺术家。白海·小马深受工艺美术运动的影响(Arts and Crafts Movement)，采用传统制作技术，专门从事手工锻铁花园家具和防火屏风，同时还擅长山水绘画。

如今，已有100多年历史的英式村庄陈旧不堪，因此当地艺术家和建筑师已计划募资3500万美元，试图保护这个从18世纪爱马面粉厂发展而来、并由此激发来自世界各地艺术家创造灵感的小村庄，希望到2030年修复好村落里多数建筑物。
