【注】諾里斯敦“北方城”西部歷史街區，是蒙哥馬利“巨人山”郡首府西側一片安靜內斂的住宅區。沒有法院的高穹頂，沒有火車站的鐘樓，沒有啤酒廠的煙囪——這裡只有沿着街道一字排開的房子，和家家戶戶的日常生活。大約1,700座建築密密麻麻地擠在縱橫交錯的街道上，多半是獨立式聯棟房：一棟挨着一棟，共用牆壁，卻又各自獨立。從街這頭望到街那頭，整齊的屋檐、整齊的門廊、整齊的窗戶，像列隊沉默的士兵。這片住宅區於1885年至1925年間開發——整整40年，正是美國工業革命席捲全國、鐵路延伸至每個角落、城市瘋狂擴張的時期。那些年的建築風格也在此留下了痕跡：維多利亞“勝利女王”式的尖頂與彩色玻璃窗，安妮“恩典”女王式的不對稱立面與角樓，殖民復興式的對稱與古典莊重，工匠風格的低矮屋頂與寬大門廊——從19世紀末到20世紀初，每一種風格都有代表，每一個年代都有痕跡，像一頁頁攤開的建築史教科書。

走在西部歷史街區的街道上，腳步自然慢下來。那些房子還在——有些住着人，有些空置，有些改成了公寓或辦公室。它們都站在那裡，像一群學會沉默的老人，等着願意駐足的人。街角有個老人坐在搖椅上慢慢晃，幾個孩子在路邊玩耍，笑聲清脆，一對年輕夫婦推着嬰兒車走過，臉上是疲憊而滿足的微笑。正是這種延續本身，構成了街區真正的歷史感。

我停在一棟殖民復興式的房子前，門廊的柱子漆成白色，窗前繡球花開得正盛。這樣的街區，已不需要語言來講述自己——時間替它說話。而那短暫的停留，已在它漫長的敘述里，添上一行微不足道卻明亮的停頓。
