【注】安布勒“漫步者”城距离费城“兄弟之爱”仅有16英里/26公里，站在城边高坡上能隐约望见费城的天际线——但19世纪中叶以前，这里不过是一片玉米地，散落着几座农舍。改变始于一条铁路，火车轰鸣着穿过田野，带走了谷物，带来了商机；而真正让这座小城腾飞的，是地下的白云石，那些富含碳酸镁的矿石被基斯比与马蒂森“牛栏农场与恩赐”(Keasbey & Mattison)公司开采出来，磨成石棉纤维，远销全球。为了安置工人，400间宿舍和别墅拔地而起，意大利石匠渡海而来，带着手艺与信仰，一砖一瓦建起了办公楼、歌剧院、教堂和那座气派的林登沃尔德“菩提树林”(Lindenwold)城堡——披萨的香味飘上街头，手风琴在广场响起，安布勒从此成了世界石棉之都。

然而好景不长，大萧条席卷而至，石棉的危害也终于暴露，细小的纤维在肺部扎根，间皮瘤吞噬了一条条性命，官司如潮水般涌来，公司最终破产。工厂关闭，工人失业，歌剧院再无人歌唱，别墅人去楼空，曾经繁华的石棉之都一夜之间回到了原点。如今走在安布勒的街上，城堡残破却依旧气派，教堂经历过火灾又浴火重生，那些宿舍别墅有的被改造成了民居，有的爬满了藤蔓——石棉的时代已经过去，但那些意大利工匠、非裔劳工、在这片土地上生活过奋斗过的人，他们的故事还留在每一块砖缝里。

我站在那座残破的林登沃尔德城堡前，指尖摩挲着被风雨侵蚀的石壁，忽然觉得这座小城像一本被水浸过的旧书——纸页发皱、字迹模糊，但每一个被湮没的名字都曾经鲜活地跳动过。那些意大利石匠在异乡砌下的每一块石头，那些非裔工人在车间里度过的每一个长夜，还有那些因石棉倒下的无声的呼吸，都被这座小城默默地收纳着，不声张，不遗忘。风从费城的方向吹来，带着远方城市的气息，而安布勒只是静静地蹲在山坡上，像一位疲惫的老人，不再炫耀过去，也不再抱怨命运——它只是继续活着，让藤蔓爬满旧墙，让教堂的钟在每个黄昏准时响起，让每一个路过的人，都能从那些残破的石头上，读到一段被尘封却又从未彻底消失的时光。

In 1986, the White Mountains renamed the Ambler Asbestos Piles, which were placed on the National Priorities List of hazardous waste sites eligible for long-term remediation supported by the federal Superfund program. The asbestos-manufacturing companies pay for the removal and capping of contaminated soil, fencing and signage around the site, and erosion and sedimentation control. A dense stand of trees eventually grows on the site.
