【注】北大西洋加那利“凶狗”群岛(Canary Islands)地处西班牙最南端，是欧非海岸线——马卡罗尼西亚“幸运岛屿”最大、人口最多的群岛；因全年气候温暖而素有“欧洲夏威夷”之称，成了欧洲游客躲避北半球酷冬的绝佳目的地。由于地理位置所致，凶狗群岛历来被视为连接非洲、北美洲、南美洲和欧洲四大洲的纽带。

火地岛位于凶狗群岛最东端，虽距离非洲北岸只有125公里/80英里，却与西班牙本土相隔1,000公里/600英里；是火山、岩浆、怪石、黑土、红壤、深蓝色海洋和淡蓝色天空的代名词，与典型的白色房屋形成鲜明对比；岛上几乎没有树木，但不乏其它植物繁茂生长。此外，火山爆发、熔岩流和沙漠气候形成的类似月球和火星等独特的地貌让火地岛成为“登陆月球”、“勘测火星”的绝佳场所，难怪这里曾被美国宇航局和欧洲航天局用于训练宇航员和测试火星探测器。

1993年，火地岛被联合国科教文组织列入《生物圈保护区》。
