A Love Story (7) The worse and the worst came much sooner than Yang expected before he even got a chance to talk to Jia again. He was called up to the main office of the Department General Branch of CCP by the secretary general of the Party General Branch. The conversation, or rather an interrogation didn’t go well as Yang felt his personal privacy and right was violated, and as the secretary general felt his authority was challenged by Yang. The meeting end up with Yang’s whatever attitude and with the threat from secretary general that he would do whatever it’d take in his power to see Yang’s dismissal from his graduate program. An accusation of a morally crooked individual who tried to discard his wife after changing of his social status was good enough to be legit. And a dismissal of Yang was also good enough to save the secretary general’s face and personal pride and agenda, giving that he was comfortably visited by Jia’s parents. Soon Yang realized that Jia and her family employed all their social influences to bring him down when he was scheduled to report to the General Committee of Communist Party and the Communist Youth League of the university, the president’s office, the graduate school, the Communist Youth League of the province, the Women Association of the province, and the Daily News of the province. He almost wanted to just quit his graduate program and go back to Qiu to save all the hustles that he had to go through. But his major advisor, the head of the department, and graduate school all wanted and encouraged him not to give up his right and chance to finish his graduate study not only because he was a standout top recruit of his class, but also because they all believed that getting a divorce had nothing to do with his morality or his academic career. So he survived all those horrible times with a lot of people behind him. Yang wrote Qiu a few letters but got none replied. What Yang didn’t know was that soon after he left the community college, people started spreading rumors about him and Qiu. Qiu became a focus of third person talk in the much bored rural community. And before long the rumor reached out to Jia’s family. Jia’s mother paid two visits to the community and Qiu, trying to persuade Qiu with carrot and stick in her hands to join the attack to Yang in the name of saving Qiu’s reputation in the community. In the effort to save Yang’s career, Qiu insisted that she loved Yang but got nothing in return from Yang. Qiu didn’t write Yang back either for she was afraid that would make the situation even worse. But one thing couldn’t be changed was her love to Yang in her heart. She was waiting and hoping someday they could be together. To be Continued |
