Drawing the Charmed Circle in Designing Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights Education: Reflections on Twenty Years’ Practice ——《性教育》,第26卷第5期,2026年9月—— <Sex Education>, Volume 26, Issue 5, September 2026 【摘要】设计与实施性与生殖健康及权利(SRHR)课程对教育者提出了极高要求;教育者不仅需兼顾教学、政治、社会及体制层面的优先事项,还要应对自身、学习者及同事的情感反应。 [Abstract] Designing and delivering sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) curricula demands much of educators, who must juggle pedagogic, political, social and institutional priorities alongside managing the affect of learners, colleagues and themselves. Reflexivity is critical if SRHR education is to engage effectively with debated and contested topics and develop learning resources that are appropriate to diverse learners. In this paper, I argue that Gayle Rubin’s ‘charmed circle’ of sexuality offers a particularly useful tool for cultivating reflexivity, by enabling exploration of the ways sexual hierarchies are constantly inscribed, reinscribed and resisted within SRHR education. I focus on the design stage of curricula, reflecting on twenty years of practice as an educator. I identify some of the ways in which I, both wittingly and unwittingly, drew the charmed circle through practices ranging from micro-level decisions about terminology to macro-level inscriptions in geo-political organisations and colonial legacies. I offer a micro, meso and macro-level model of ways in which the charmed circle might be drawn in SRHR education, and conclude with a structured design tool for other educators to use, in order to reflexively attend to the operationalisation of charmed circles within their own practice.
