The Imperial Complex — The Source of Human Suffering

Peter Lee in Toronto

Across today’s world, wars and human tragedies are unfolding in several regions. The reasons are complex, yet at the core lies a single, persistent cause: the imperial complex of certain national leaders. Obsessed with restoring the territories and influence of former empires, they equate the revival of imperial grandeur with national strength and identity. Driven by this outdated consciousness, wars like the Russia–Ukraine conflict erupted, and turmoil in the Middle East never ceases.

Empires were once a natural stage in humanity’s political evolution. Yet history has moved on. The imperial system belongs to the past. Still, some nations remain trapped in illusions of restoration. Their leaders, wielding powerful propaganda tools, glorify the empires of old—boasting vast lands, “heroic” rulers, and supposed national prosperity. Through asymmetric information and selective memory, they mislead citizens into longing for imperial systems, masking domination and conquest as unity and pride. The Russia–Ukraine war is one tragic outcome of such a delusion—inflicting enormous loss of life and destruction upon both nations.

In our time, certain states still preserve the essence of empire beneath the guise of republics. Their rulers bear the title of “president” but wield the unchecked authority of monarchs. These regimes suppress independent media, silence dissent, and deny citizens fundamental rights. Without public oversight or institutional balance, a single leader’s will can dictate national fate—allowing irrational conflicts to persist for years, as seen in the ongoing war in Eastern Europe.

Ironically, many of these empire-minded nations are blessed with vast natural resources and intelligent, hardworking citizens. Yet their societies lag behind in technology and living standards. The reason is structural: imperial systems are inherently inefficient and unjust. Wealth is concentrated in the hands of a few; social mobility is stifled; innovation suffocates. To project power abroad, such regimes lavish resources on foreign influence while neglecting the basic needs of their own people. The result is stagnation at home and isolation abroad—a cycle of decline born from arrogance.

Ultimately, the imperial complex has become one of the great sources of instability in our era. Behind the facade of republics, some states continue to think and act like empires—controlling information, exporting conflicts, and confusing domination with dignity. The outcome is always the same: internal decay, external confrontation, and the suffering of ordinary people.

To overcome this curse, humanity must transcend the imperial mindset. True strength lies not in conquest or nostalgia, but in freedom, justice, and respect for human dignity. Only when nations abandon the shadows of empire can the world move toward genuine peace and progress.
