1 By AndyRadia | Canada Politics – Fri, 11 Jan, 2013 Radio station fires DJ who asked B.C. Premier ChristyClark if she was a ‘MILF’ (网路照片) In what's been dubbed by some as 'MILF-gate', radio DJ Justin Wilcomes was fired after asking B.C Premier Christy … A shock jock on Vancouver Island says he hasbeen fired for doing his job. In what's been dubbed by some as 'MILF-gate', radio DJJustin Wilcomes — aka Drex — asked B.C Premier Christy Clark what it was liketo be a MILF during a live on-air interview last month. To everyone's surprise, the premier actually answered thequestion. [Related: B.C. Premier Christy Clark: 'Better a MILF than a cougar' ] "You know, I take that as a compliment … you know,it’s one of those things," Clark said. "Better a MILF than a cougar." Now, according to Wilcomes, he's been unfairly firedbecause of the question and the subsequent public uproar. "I did what was expected of me," he told a CKWX1130 on Thursday. “I work at a rock station. We do entertainment and comedyinterspersed with things in our community. I don’t think it was a bad thing. Ithink, more the media attention is what they were angry about." Wilcomes went on to say that he wanted to apologize to thepremier for the question but was never given the opportunity. "I wanted to do that but I was told I wasn’t allowedto say anything to anybody about anything at any stage," he said. According to the Vancouver Province, Wilcomes will be meeting with a lawyerabout the firing on Monday. Whether he should or shouldn't be fired is certainly up fordebate. But there is somebody else that is culpable here and that's Clark. [Related: Will 2013 continue the boom for women in politics? ] While Drex may have just been doing his job by asking thequestion, Clark — as premier — should have handled it better; she should havesaid 'I'm not answering that, let's move on.' Who knows — if she did that, Wilcomes could still begainfully employed. Regardless, voters in B.C. will have their chance to fireChristy Clark — for her inappropriate response — in May. Update:(5:20pm EST on Jan. 11): Wilcomes appeared on CKNW Radio on Friday afternoon and said that he hasaccepted a job offer by another radio station: Vancouver's CFOX. He also says that people should just relax about hisquestion to the premier. "I think people need to lighten up. Why doeseverything have to be so serious all the time," he said. "The whole reason this became a news story is becausethe B.C. Conservative party are... looking for something to attack her on. Itcomes down to this: whether she's the premier or not, she's a person, she hasan opinion, she has a sense of humour and if anything I think that humanizedher more than anything else." --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 原文欣赏2 By AndyRadia | Canada Politics – Fri, 28 Dec, 2012 B.C. Premier Christy Clark: “Better a MILF than acougar” Is B.C. Premier Christy Clark a MILF or acougar? It's clearly an inappropriate, even vulgar question. AMILF, of course is an acronym for 'Mother I'd like to f@#$' and acougar is an older woman who goes after younger men. But, last week, during an interview on a Vancouver Island radio station, PremierClark received such a question. What's worse, is that she answered it. As chronicled by the Vancouver Province, 98.9 JetFM host Drex asked Clark what itwas like to be a MILF (apparently 'Drex' was asking on behalf of a listener). Here's the premier's response: "You know, I take that as a compliment … you know,it’s one of those things. Better a MILF than a cougar … so tell him I saidthank-you." TheProvince newspaper goes on to quote Clark's presssecretary who said the premier was "shocked" by the question and"responded accordingly and simply wanted to move on." [Related: McGuinty, Clark ranked as Canada's least popular premiers ] But others aren't as forgiving — Clark's responseelicited a traditional and social media debate that went into the wee hours ofFriday morning. "That two-sentence exchange has, it seems, given theClark-haters enough fuel to carry them well into the new year," the Victoria Times-Colonist editor David Obee wrote in hisnewspaper. "Personally, I think she did the best she could withan unexpected, inappropriate, insulting, stupid question. She answered itquickly and moved on. That’s not good enough for the critics, who have hadtime — something Clark did not have — to think of all sorts of things thatClark could have said or done." Veteran Global TV reporter Keith Baldry agreed that the question was adisgrace but Tweetedthat Clark "should have shut [the host] down" instead of "tryingto a score a point." And then there's blogger Laila Yuile who wrote an excellent piece suggesting thatChristy Clark brought on the question herself. Yuile references a July 2010 interview with the Vancouver Sun— when Clark was a radio talk show host — where she talks about herfavourite television show, Manswers, and recounts an episode where they were asking howlarge breasts would actually have to be to crush a beer can. "And people are attacking the [98.9 JetFM] radiohost for an insulting ,vulgar and inappropriate question?" Yuile writes. "On a radio station much like The Fox, or Rock 101, both ofwhich [Clark] has shown her sense of humour on in the past, documented in soundbytes and photos for the world to see? "Give me a break." [More politics: Top political YouTube videos of 2012 ] Certainly the MILF question should not have been asked. But Clark should not have had answered it; she should havesaid 'I'm not answering that, let's move on.' And to Yuile's point: would anyone even think of askingAlberta premier Alison Redford that question? Would any radio station dare ask that question to one ofCanada's senior federal cabinet ministers such as Rona Ambrose or LeonaAglukkaq? Probably not. And if they did, they wouldn't be getting a response. |
