朝鮮戰爭結束後，美國宣布有54246人戰死，8000多人失蹤。但到近年，這個戰死人數縮小到36000餘人。對此，眾說紛紜。“美國戰爭紀念委員會”網站給出了一個官方的解釋如下（http://www.abmc.gov/search/koreanwar.php）：

“Accessible electronically at the memorial is a Honor Roll database where all 54,246 should be listed. Unfortunately, a fire at the National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis, Missouri destroyed many of the records of service personnel and a complete listing is not available. To date, the database includes the names of nearly 39,000 service men and women who died during that period..."

原來一場火災燒毀了很多朝鮮戰爭陣亡士兵的資料。據我所知，美國政府的很多資料是把紙張放在紙箱子裡編號存在全國各地的資料中心，除非是極重要的資料，並無備份。如果你知道編號，可以去查或者拷貝，但那是一個很麻煩的過程。有次我想查一個幾年前的案子的資料，原案是E-FILE，但居然發現已經沒有電子文檔，只能到某偏遠地域去填表要求拷貝，一通電話之後，工作人員跑出來說，看了一下，一共有好幾箱子，根本無法複印（除非我願意繳納巨款，每頁的複印費好像不低）。
