Never say never. Hello, everyone. Happy Halloween!
Is Taiwan going to be a NATO member? "Fat chance!" Xi Jinping dismisses this hypothetical question out of hand. Then one day, the self-willed Xi announces to the world that he will "defend China's Taiwan" with a nuclear strike against any encroaching military force---no ifs, ands, or buts. He dares the United States to call his bluff, knowing that Taiwan is not absolutely indispensable to Uncle Sam.
The politically breakaway island always has a sword of Democles hanging over its head.
This is Taiwan's unspeakable nightmare: Xi will be winning when and if the United States starts talking itself into appeasement masked as "progress toward peace," which is virtually a re-enactment of the Chamberlain-Hitler Munich Agreement of 1938.
No wonder Taiwan has recently pulled out all the stops to cement its diplomatic relationship with the Czech Republic, a member of NATO. Taiwan means to serve NATO with a friendly reminder of conscience. Good luck with that. In history, conscience had repeatedly been traded away by nations big and small.
"Trick or treat?" Uncle Sam has to respond.
