Liberty不是“自由”，而是“解放”

很多中国人，把英语词汇“Liberty”翻译成自由。例如，Liberty Bell被翻译成自由钟，Statue of Liberty翻译成自由女神。等等。

我认为，这是一种不准确的，甚至可以说是错误翻译。正确的翻译应该是“解放”。
仔细想想，其实这Liberty 和Freedom是有很大区别的。

今天就写这几句了。

请注意，“Freedom from...”与毫无前提的“Freedom”是有区别的。
Freedom from...是指从某种被约束状态解放出来，解除这种特定的约束。而不是指毫无任何其他约束。

完全赞同。我读完J.S. Mill’s On Liberty 乊后也是这样想的。穆勒的意思中,liberty 是指摆脱国家对个人的束缚，实质就是解放出来，而不是中文这个歧义多多的自由。

根据Merria-Webster字典的解释，

其中1.b和1.c的确有处于被解放的自由的状态的意思。
