Susan
Susan
Dear Mrs. S
Congratulations on
your marriage! Your summer sounds likes a pretty significant one, certainly
more significant than mine! Like you, I’m excited about 8th grade (though
probably for different reasons, like new teachers, being older than the two
other grades in the school, last year of middle school, etc.), but I also miss
my summer. Though it wasn’t super-exciting, I enjoyed it very much.
This summer, I
mostly stayed at home, slept and woke up late, read books, and wrote stuff. It
was very relaxing to be able to take a break from all the rush and hurry from
school. I also went on a vacation with my family. We drove back to Malden (a suburb near Boston)
to visit my old friends, and stopped at Pittsburgh,
Washington DC, Philadelphia, and Niagara
Falls along the way. It was awesome! My parents
enjoyed visiting all the tourist attractions the most, while I enjoyed going
back to Malden
the most. My friends threw a welcome-back party for me on the night I got back.
It was so sweet!
I also went on a
missions trip to a poor neighborhood in Chicago
with my youth group (from church). We helped host VBS with the church there,
and helped around fixing the old building. We lived there (in the church) for
five days! It was probably the longest I’ve spent away from home, and it was
totally awesome! I had lots of fun.
Enough about
summer. I should talk more about me. Me and my parents moved from China
five years ago, when I was eight. We moved a lot— first to Chicago for two
months, then to Boston, then back to Chiacagoland (Oak Park), and then to Village
of H last winter. I like writing (not writing as in handwriting, writing as in
creative writing), I write a lot. I’m also an avid reader. Let’s see, what else…I
like YouTube, going to God-X (that’s my youth group), Rubik’s Cubes, drawing,
listening to music (especially 1D and the K-pop band Big Bang), and egg omelets.
I really, really, really dislike insects, bugs, moths, butterflies, bees, etc.
I like most of my subjects in school, with the exception of gym. I’m really not
a sporty person.
I’m looking
forward a new start this year in 8th grade. I’m usually a pretty good student,
but somehow, last year in 7th grade, I wasn’t focusing very much on my
schoolwork (for various reasons). That plus the fact that HMS was harder than I’d
thought (most of my schools before never really challenged me except for this
one) made 7th grade a bad year for me. I’m hoping that in 8th grade, I’ll be
able to concentrate my schoolwork again and set up a good start for high school.
I like science, it’s
very interesting. However, I don’t like how some of my teachers have taught it.
I haven’t had a good science teacher since… wow, I don’t really know. Somehow,
my unfortunate luck landed me with the worst science teachers (me and my
classmates). One was too unreasonable and even made a student cry by shouting
at him. Another other didn’t even know that much about science, and I didn’t
learn anything in her class. Another was super boring, all she does is talk and
talk and talk in a monotonous voice. Another was alright, but she talked really
fast and her class was really fast paced, and most of her students had a really
hard time keeping up with her. Last year at HMS, I had a fairly good science
teacher, and this year, I’m hoping for a good one as well! I really like
learning about science, but most of my past teachers have made it difficult.
Uh-oh. I had
planned for this to be at most one page, but now, it looks like it’s going to
be a page and a half! That’s the problem with me, I write too much, and my mom’s
been trying to get me to only write about what’s important. But the way I see
it, everything is important! That’s something I have to learn. Speaking of
learning, I’m looking forward to learning a lot in 8th grade and in your class!
It’s time to leave summer behind, and get ready for my last year of middle
school!
From your student,
Susan
