The American conductor and composer Leonard Bernstein is widely regarded as one of the two most iconic conductors of the 20th century. His closest counterpart was the legendary German conductor Herbert von Karajan, who served for decades as music director of the Berlin Philharmonic. Bernstein and Karajan were near-contemporaries and, remarkably, died within a year of each other. |
