Thoreau closes the chapter with a subtle irony: though he lives alone in the woods, he often finds himself physically near others—farmers, fishermen, passersby. Yet proximity does not equal connection. He feels more truly accompanied by nature than by society. Solitude, paradoxically, brings him closer to truth, to clarity, and even to others—by removing the noise that obscures real presence.

Though I dwell alone, I am not far from others. I hear their carts, their voices, their footsteps. Sometimes they pass within a few rods of my door. Yet I feel no intrusion, and no need to join them.

I have found that distance does not divide, and nearness does not unite. I have felt more alone in crowds than in forests. True company is not measured in steps, but in silence.
