我們當年也並不很懂自己要的民主。民主的精髓是compromise, give and take。當年吾爾凱西在大會堂corner李鵬，逼得官宦政府只有彈壓一條路。我不是說政府做得對，我只是想說政府被corner的必然反應會是彈壓。您corner一隻狗試試？何況政府。在咱眼裡，政府都是不如狗的王八蛋。我反思的不是what should happen，而是what happened。政治是門妥協的藝術，like it or not。政治不是你我書生眼裡的“what should happen”，而是現實中各方利益的平衡導致的what happened/happens。
吾以為該民生為大、民生優先，民主雖乃中國必由之路(因為非如此無法約束政府，不約束政府則老百姓難長久安身立命)，但我本人並不看好民主。在米國呆這麼多年，算是看透了民主的迷思和迷失。米國開國國父之一的John Adams曾鐵口直斷：“Democracy... while it lasts is more bloody than either aristocracy or monarchy. Remember,
democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There is never a democracy that did not commit suicide”。原因是政治上的民主遲早會栽在經濟上。經濟又決定着老百姓的“民以食為天”。民主一定會導致某種程度的社會主義(socialism)，如歐洲。撒切爾夫人有句名言：“the problem with socialism is you will run out of other people's money sooner or later”。世事無奈。
