THE PEONIES ARE BLOOMING!
In a class I have been attending
I have been given homework - to write a poem about a tree
In structured line, structured verse, based on four lines by
Robert Frost, an unimaginable stretch for me!
Instead, even though I love
trees, I have a need
To write a poem about peonies
To celebrate nature's never-ending gifts of color and growth
And - perhaps - to assert my carefully-treasured independence?
And so, as soon as I arise on a drippy, misty morning
I inch my way around space-consuming van,
Past ever-reproachful garage clutter
To go out the back door to find the morning's miracle
The peonies have begun to bloom!
Some full-blown, some half unfurled, some tightly wound
All covered in droplets of mist and rain, a symphony of pink and red and white,
Thrusting forth from their nurturing foliage of varying shades of green
I cut two of the fragrant beauties and take them in to my breakfast table
Where I ponder memories of childhood Memorial Day trips
With my mother and my aunts to place blossom-filled Mason jars
Alongside mossy family markers on shady burial plots
And memories, too, of a shadowy person known as " Doc," who called them "pineys,"
As he always had from his early childhood days in the hill country of Kentucky -
Doc - beloved hired man, whom I early-on adopted as a
Make-believe grandfather, because I had none of my own.
And I puzzle to try to understand the urgent need I feel these days
To protect my independence, my own creativity -
Why not respond to the request of a teacher who is opening up to me
A richness of American culture of which I had been totally uninformed?
Why not try to write a poem about a tree?
Trees, peonies, dedicated teachers, distinguished poets, and me
All a part of the great marvelously-structured
Infinite Scheme of Things we call Life,
Needing to be celebrated, needing to be pondered upon, needing to be understood
In honor of all of the above, even Robert Frost - I'll try!
