The literature, Scar and Rethink
Ming Cheng
The so called scar literature were the most acclaimed and influential works for Chinese students in early 80s when the whole nation was just recovered from CR Cultural Revolution.
Having recreated for bitter life of blood and sweat, it is easy to be sympathetic with those suffered during the CR. It is understandable that writers of such historic memories felt into the pattern of writing and focusing on the tribulations. With all due respect to their job well done, however, more recently, I found myself not so satisfied with such sentimental and subdued reflection on the CR anymore, even for many, the wounds have yet to heal.
Rethink of CR after almost half century, politics aside, the literature should more focus on the evolution and change of consciousness and culture of our nation that happened during the historical period. To my mind, that is the most negative and neglected aspect of CR, or any human revolution.
Human nature is the eternal themes of social literature, if it has one. CR remains as a part of our history that we can not evade and pretend to forget. It will be a glorious day for our nation when we can learn a right lesson from Cultural Revolution and the part of humanity we lost can be rebuilt.
