唐代诗人陈子昂（661-702）《登幽州台歌》绝句：

前不见古人，

后不见来者。

念天地之悠悠，

独怆然而涕下。

译者注：诗人因官场失意，怀才不遇，登上千年前春秋诸侯国年间燕国贤明君主燕昭王修建黄金台广召天下高才的幽州台，奈何呼天天不应，叫地地不灵，惟见天苍苍地茫茫，顿感落寞悲凉，不禁痛哭流涕。

No ancestors standing out in retrospect,

no future comers either as I look ahead.
