幾年前有一個電視節目，叫做“Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?”，就是讓一個個受過良好教育的成年人與幾個五年級的孩子同台比賽，回答一些小學1-5年級各學科中能學到的知識性問題。那個節目中，能成功打通關的參賽者寥寥無幾，最通常的結果，就是敗下陣來的成年人要對着鏡頭莊嚴承認, “我一點不比五年級的孩子更聰明”！

我對接受這一點毫無困難，因為家裡就有小學生，常常讓我驚訝而自愧不如。碰上什麼不認識的單詞去問人家，往往要忍受一點鄙夷：怎麼連這個都不知道？有些生僻的單詞，我實在無法想像一個小學生何時何處能夠接觸學習到，問之，孩子的回答竟然是：“這就是英語啊！You know English, you know the word.” 我氣結，但是也明白了，孩子的學習是浸濡式的，如海綿吸水般全方位的汲取；而成人的學習往往是單點式的，還要依賴點死記硬背。

我今天準備拿回家挑戰小學生的，是下面這個“100 Words Every High School Graduate Should Know”，高中生應知的100個英語單詞。這些單詞由美國 American Heritage® Dictionaries的編輯們精心編選。其主編Steven Kleinedler 認為，這100個單詞雖然無法做到詳盡，但卻是一個很好的自我衡量標準，"如果你知道如何正確運用這些單詞，那麼你的（英語）語言運用能力一定夠出色。"
