
【原文】
天下皆知美之為美,斯惡已;
皆知善之為善,斯不善矣。
故有無相生,難易相成,長短相較,高下相傾,音聲相和,前後相隨。
是以聖人處無為之事,行不言之教,萬物作焉而不辭。
生而不有,為而不恃,功成而弗居。
夫唯弗居,是以不去。
【散文譯】
山野百花爭艷,豈能盡除而單留玫瑰?
楚王偏好細腰,國中必多餓鬼。
華人為忠君盡孝,生出多少愚昧;
西人倡民主自由,終致資源匱危。
且看天地萬物,本來相輔相成——
地熱霧露蒸於無影,天寒冰霜結自無形;
拆電腦不過簡單原件,使合成則功能奇驚;
以尺折米,短為三分之一,
以尺量寸,長為十倍之正;
山下仰望,顛頂為高,
海洋低處,江河盡傾;
唱而無樂,難免單調,
音聲相和,情滿大廳;
一隊行進,前後相隨,
首尾相連,前後何名?
聖人循道,自然而行——
事來應之,為而必能;
問來答之,言而中聽。
春來陽回,萬物競生,
悠悠播種在我,離離禾熟天成。
我成事業,豈能自居?
憑藉眾力,天佑地資。
恃才傲物,眾人妒之,
居功而驕,眾人謀之。
我無虛名,何來誹謗之憂;
我無高位,自無失落之懼;
我無厚利,豈有蕩產之虞。
噫乎噫乎,從未擁有,何來失去!

【英譯】
When everyone impersonates the beautiful for being beautiful,
This in fact is ugly;
When everyone copies the good for being good,
This in fact is no-good.
For existence and nihility give birth to each other;
Difficulty and ease turn into one another;
Long and short measure each other;
High and low exhibit each other;
Voice and sound harmonize each other;
Front and back follow each other.
Therefore, the Sage deals with others disinterestedly
And spreads his teaching without arguing.
In this way, all beings develop by their own nature.
He brings up things, but does not occupy them;
He is competent, but does not feel self-important;
He reaches his success, but does not dwell upon it.
Not does he dwell upon his success
That no one can ever take it away from him.
