叶慈禅诗新译 傅正明衍译 纪念威廉•巴特勒•叶慈诞辰一百五十周年 威廉•巴特勒•叶慈（William Butler Yeats,1865－1939），爱尔兰诗人和剧作家，1923年诺贝尔文学奖得主，主要诗集有《苇间风》（The Wind Among the Reeds,1899）和《塔》（The Tower, 1928）等。 译者按∶叶慈沉迷的见神论（theosophy），是与犹太教和基督教神秘主义传统有关的一种信仰。他後来直接接触佛教，偏爱禅宗，与日本禅师铃木大拙有书信来往。他的某些诗歌，既有多彩的希腊文明和希伯来文明的色彩，又有浓厚的禅宗意味。原因之一，是因为他热爱的本土文明，即凯尔特文明，与佛教相通之处颇多，因此，早就有人创立了凯尔特佛教（Celtic Buddhism）。这一点，我已在《叶慈之鸟∶叶慈的「情殇」及其禅宗公案意味》(见傅正明著《地球文学结构》,联经，2013)等文章中作了探讨。

1. We Can Make Our Minds So Like Still Water
We can make our minds so like still water
that beings gather about us to see their own images,
and so live for a moment with a clearer,
perhaps even with a fiercer life because of our silence. 1. 修心之道（七律）❶ 人心散乱若飞蓬，亦可安如水一泓， 戏浪鱼虾莲叶下，观空意象镜湖中。 三春生命多朝气，万寿僵尸欠夕红。 向晚晴光非欲火，只缘默照悟圆融。 ❶ 译自叶慈的《凯尔特的薄暮》( Celtic Twilight,1902) 中的短文<大地，火和水>( Earth, Fire and Water)，以首行为题，引用者大多分行排列，因为原书是以诗意的笔调记叙的爱尔兰神话传说。 2. The Coming of Wisdom with Time THOUGH leaves are many, the root is one;
Through all the lying days of my youth
I swayed my leaves and flowers in the sun;

The Nineteenth Century and After Though the great song return no more There’s keen delight in what we have: The rattle of pebbles on the shore Under the receding vave. 3. 十九世纪以降(七绝) ❶ 即使崇高不再歌， 平凡喜乐可吟哦∶ 沙滩鹅石铮铮响， 任尔潮来又退波。 ❶译自叶慈诗集《盘旋的楼梯和其他诗作》（The Winding Stair and Other Poems,1933）。这首诗是对阿诺德（Matthew Arnold）名诗《多佛海滩》(Dower Beach)的悲观情绪的一种乐观回应。 4. The Sorrow of Love The quarrel of the sparrows in the eaves, The full round moon and the star-laden sky, And the loud song of the ever-singing leaves Had hid away earth's old and weary cry.
And then you came with those red mournful lips, 5 And with you came the whole of the world's tears, And all the sorrows of her labouring ships, And all burden of her myriad years.

4. 情殇（之一,七绝三首）❶ 禾雀群飞绕屋檐， 叽喳争嘴对星天， 高吟草叶含离恨， 浊世泪泉流远天。 绝代风华遭劫後，❷ 普天悲戚伤红颜。 残帆壮士三生苦， 重负史家千载肩。 禾雀重来闹屋檐， 星河冷落蟾宫寒， 高吟草叶迷津渡， 慰我愁人哭晓天。 1892年初写本 ❶ 这首诗最初发表1892年，即诗人认识女演员、爱尔兰民族主义者毛德·岗（Maud Gonne）两年之後的热恋中。 ❷ 指引发特洛伊战争的海伦。 5. 5. 情殇（之二，七绝三首）❶ 禾雀单飞绕屋檐， 叽喳争嘴对星天，❷ 亲和浩月照芳草， 抚慰愁人止泪泉。 朱唇情劫起争端， 举世哀伤泪不乾， 壮士风帆远征苦，❸ 霸王城阙劫灰寒。❹ 今夜又闻单雀喧， 星光显隐拱婵娟。 两心牵动含情草， 一鸟鸣空破晓天。 1925年重写本 ❶ 1925年诗人重写这首诗，借怀古抒写他对毛德·岗的无望之恋以及对爱尔兰民族独立运动的思考。这两首诗均曾由笔者译为词体「八六子」，载《英美抒情诗新译》（台湾商务印书馆，2012年）。这裏每首译为三首七绝，风味有所不同，请相互参看。 ❷叶慈把旧版的“The quarrel of the sparrows”（几苹麻雀的口角）改为“The brawling of a sparrow”（一苹麻雀的争嘴），曾引起一位批评家的质疑∶一苹麻雀能争嘴吗？实际上叶慈在散文《人之魂》（Anima Hominus）中已回答了这个问题∶「借重与别人争嘴，我们造出雄辩术，借重与自己争嘴，我们造出诗歌。（We make out of the quarrel with others, rhetoric, but of the quarrel with ourselves, poetry.）」可见这首诗修改後的起句，有类似於禅宗公案的意义。 ❸ 壮士，指原文点明的希腊英雄奥德修斯。 ❹ 霸王，指原文点明的特洛伊国王普莱姆。这个傲慢的国王在特洛伊陷落後被希腊英雄阿基里斯杀死。
