Lucien Lévy-Bruhl (1857～1939)

法国社会学家、哲学家、民族学家，法国社会学年鉴派的重要成员。又译莱维－布律尔、列维－布吕尔。犹太人。1857年 4月10日生于巴黎。1879年于巴黎高等师范学校毕业。曾在中等学校教哲学。1884年取得博士学位。1899～1927年在巴黎大学任教，从1908年起任教授。曾任民族志研究所所长。1917年当选为法国道德与政治科学院院士。1939年 3月13日在巴黎去世。主要著作有：《低级社会中的智力机能》(1910)、《原始人的心灵》(1922)、《原始人的灵魂》(1927)等。

近日阅读《原始思维》。《原始思维》是列维－布留尔得到世界公认的名著。一路看下来，感到出彩之处颇多，受益匪浅。不料在第447页处有这样一段文字：

中国的科学就是发展停滞的

一个怵目惊心的例子。它产生了天文学、物理学、化学、生理学、病理学、治疗学以及诸如此类的浩如烟海

的百科全书。但在我们看来,所以这一切只不过是扯淡。

怎么可以在许多世纪中付出

这样多的勤劳和机智而其

结果却完全等于零呢？这是

由于许多原因造成的，但无疑主要的是由于这些所谓的

科学中的每一种都是奠基在

僵化的概念上，而这些概念

从来没有受到过经验的检验，它们差不多只是包含着一些带上神秘的前关联的未经实际证实的概念。这些概念所具有的抽象的和一般的

形式可以容许一种表面上

合逻辑的分析与综合的

双重过程，而这个永远是

空洞的自足的过程可以

没完没了地继续下去。

and this process, always futile yet ever self-satisﬁed, is carried on to inﬁnity.

Those who are best acquainted with the Chinese mentality—like De Groot, for instance—almost despair of seeing it free itself from its shackles and cease revolving on its own axis.

说实话，列维－布留尔的这段文字让我读来怵目惊心。作者对原始思维的研究深入细致，评论客观公允，怎么在述及中国古代科学时，且不论正确与否，会带有如此强烈的感情色彩？这段引文中的最后一句话尤其令我震撼。在相当程度上，这段话确是对国人延续至今之思维方式的深刻把握：
