John Robert Bolton (born November 20, 1948) is an American attorney, 

political commentator, Republican consultant, government official and 

former diplomat who serves as the 27th National Security Advisor of the 

United States. He began his tenure as National Security Advisor on April

 9, 2018.[6] Bolton served as the United States Ambassador to the United 

Nations from August 2005 to December 2006 as a recess appointee by 

President George W. Bush.[7] He resigned at the end of his recess 

appointment in December 2006[8][9] because he was unlikely to win 

confirmation from the Senate, which the Democratic Party had gained 

control of at the time.[10][11]
