CNN — A letter penned by Albert Einstein in which he challenges the concept of religion has broken sale records at auction, fetching close to $2.9 million.
Einstein’s “God letter,” which he sent to religious philosopher Erik Gutkind, was expected to fetch between $1 million and $1.5 million at Christie’s in New York.
The letter instead reached a grand total of $2,892,500 on Tuesday following a four-minute bidding battle between two clients on the phones, setting a world auction record for an Einstein letter.

The sentence has been hailed as evidence that the physicist, one of the 20th century’s most esteemed thinkers, was an atheist. But Einstein at times said he was not an atheist, and resented being labelled as one.

It’s a New Atheist fantasy.
In reality, this letter tells us little we didn’t know. Einstein jettisoned biblical beliefs in his teens. He never attended religious services or prayed. He disliked mysticism. He could not conceive of a God who punished and rewarded people (partly because he was a thoroughgoing determinist). He repeatedly distanced himself from the idea of a personal God. He refused a tradition Jewish burial. All in all, not very religious.
