Rossetti use Lilith to represent the \'Body\'s Beauty,\' in contrast to the Soul\'s Beauty\' of Sibylla Palmifera. ...Lilith was Adam\'s first wife--a seductress and demon woman who gavebirth only to devils and who wanted equal rights in everything\" (203)
As was common with Rossetti, he wrote a poem to accompany this picture:
Of Adam\'s first wife, Lilith, it is told
(The witch he loved before the gift of Eve.)
That, ere the snake\'s, her sweet tongue could deceive,
And still her enchanted hair was the first gold.
And still she sits, young while the earth is old,
And, subtly of herself contemplative,
Draws men to watch the bright web she can weave,
Till heart and body and life are in its hold.
The rose and poppy are her flowers; for where
Is he not found, O Lilith, whom shed scent
And soft-shed kisses and soft sleep shall snare?
Lo! as that youth\'s eyes burned at thine, so went

據某些西方傳說所言，夏娃並非第一個女性。在神創造亞當之後，也用泥土創造了一個女性，叫莉莉絲 (Lilith)，神賦予「它」女性的特質。但因為她和亞當都是由泥土造成，她要求和男人平起平坐，不願成為男人的附屬，但亞當無視她的意見和感受，依然故我，莉莉絲傷心之餘她就離開了伊甸園。[ She was Adam\'s first wife, before Eve came along, but Sheleft him because he was arrogant and domineering (or he left Her because She is \"shrewish\"--- I wasn\'t there, so I cannot choose sides in the dispute)....但她離開亞當，因為他傲慢、跋扈(或者他離開她，因為她\"潑婦似\" ---我不在那，所以無法在這爭論過程中選邊站)。![](\"http://blog.creaders.net/ebola/upload_file/20080224225830.gif\") ]
亞當求上帝將他老婆抓回來，上帝就派出三名天使：Sanvi, Sansanvi and Semangelaf去勸解。但莉莉絲的心情難以平復，沒聽從天神的告誡，在三位天使無法說服她回心轉意之後，神決定放棄LILITH，於是從亞當的肋骨中抽一根來造成夏娃（Eve），這個源出男人，聽命於男人，卻要支撐著男人的雌性生物，來配戴「女人」這個名銜……

因為莉莉絲不願回到伊甸園，她受到了天神的懲罰---每天必須生100個孩子，還要忍受每天都有100個孩子死亡的命運\。在這種非人的懲罰下，莉莉絲受不了，最後投入紅海結束了生命。可憐她遭遇的天使，賜予了她再生的新力量--掌控新出生嬰兒的命運\。也許是自己的命運\太過於可憐，莉莉絲也從可憐的被害者變成加害者。對於自己能控制的人好不留情，令這些人在人生中飽受折磨。

Lilith後來遇上了撒旦（Satan） ，為魔王產下了後嗣， 其子孫為 Lilin 女兒們稱為Lilim 。在這個故事中最弔詭的是，沒人說明Lilith是什麼樣的存在。她和Adam同時受造，卻在Adam被逐出伊甸園，失去了不死的權利之後，被神放棄的 Lilith卻 仍能永生；她是神造來與Adam配合的，卻能和撒旦 (Satan)生育後代。也有說，引誘夏娃偷吃禁果的蛇就是Lilith的化身。

蘇美人（Sumeria）c2,000 to c1950 BCE的赤陶浮雕作品，顯示女神Lilith的一些特徵。具有一對翅膀和貓頭鷹腳的女人，雙手握著noone，踏在兩兩隻面向相反的方向的獅子身上（在埃及神話中也有這個神，代表過去和未來），貓頭鷹站兩邊。Lilith 在古老巴比倫、蘇美爾、希伯來和早期基督教的神話中，是個女惡魔，是一個災難的象徵。
