毛瑞特斯,柯奈利斯,艾雪(Maurits Cornelis Escher, 1898~1972)是世界知名的荷蘭版畫家，也是一名無法「歸類」的藝術家。他的版畫除了充滿藝術的本質之外，更包含了趣味的科學性、文學性、音樂性和哲學性，十分耐人尋味。

他的許多版畫都源於悖論、幻覺和雙重意義，他努力追求圖景的完備而不顧及它們的不一致，或者說讓那些不可能同時在場者同時在常他像一名施展了魔法的魔術師，利用幾乎沒有人能擺脫的邏輯和高超的畫技，將一個極具魅力的「不可能世界」立體地呈現在人們面前。他是極少數藝術家當中，能令科學家不僅把其作品當藝術來欣賞，還將之視為嚴肅的論文主題來研究剖析。

由寫實到抽像思維

綜觀艾雪的版畫，主要畫分為兩個階段：

一九三六年之前屬第一個時期。這段時期，他的作品包括肖像、動物、植物、風景，以及童話故事和傳說；處理手法非常細膩，充滿流動性、文學性與音樂性，尤其旅居義大利期間的風景版畫更流露出詩一般的韻味；而技巧的掌握與運\用準確、有力且不落俗套，但並沒有跳脫傳統版畫的表現範疇。

一九三六年出現跳躍性的轉機，他的版畫風格由寫實轉變為抽像思維。他擅長利用空間錯覺、幾何拼接、悖論結構等視覺原理和數學原理精心創作石版畫、木版畫以及金屬版畫。他的作品從「不可能」的角度重新描繪了這個客觀世界，使他的版畫作品充滿了特異獨立的美感，並給我們的主觀感受造成了極大的衝擊。

在艾雪的作品裡，我們經常可以看見鳥、魚與青蛙，這幾種動物對他而言具有特殊象徵意義：鳥代表空氣、魚代表水、青蛙則代表土地。另外，白色代表白晝，黑色即代表黑夜。有了這些理解，再來看艾雪的版畫作品，就很容易走入創作者的精神領域之中了。

他的作品往往在挑戰人的視覺恆常性，常運\用重覆的圖像、循環的動線，讓人的視線隨著他設定好的瀏覽途徑中發現意外。

主觀空間與客觀空間，不可能存在的存在

一九五○年之後的艾雪作品

以M.C.Escher最後期的奇異建築式圖畫《瀑布, Waterfall》(1961, Lithograph)這幅畫為例，他依據彭羅斯的三角原理，將整齊的立方物體堆砌在建築物上，可看到他對製造錯覺手法的細膩。

在《Waterfall》中，畫面有強烈的幾何圖形的暗示，並以幾何形的背景來製造畫面中的深度。如果把背景中點綴的小樹等植物移除掉的話，那看似梯田的坡地只是連續堆疊的長方體，甚或只是黑白分明的塊面所構成的簾幕，但Escher讓塊面的線條在畫面左邊呈現鬆散並向下傾斜，並使線條往畫面右上方收縮，暗示出從遠而近的透視感，並呈現出45度角的俯視角度。

在構圖的主體部份，Escher在畫面中繪製了兩個高塔，並利用高塔間的水流通道製造出錯置、不合現實常理的視覺假象。Escher以方體的稜角區分三方向的塊面，首先暗示出觀者以45度的俯視角度觀看畫中的建築物，而最巧妙的是利用此角度匯聚的稜線，經由塔間各平行線的暗示，混淆雙塔的前後關係與上下關係。
