It is good that everyone in here wants China to do well.
However, we need to be realistic and patient. Today, from almost every aspect, except labor cost, technology, natural or human resources, capital, etc., China is not even close to US. We are trailing by at least 30 years.
One example, from human resources standpoint, most of the good Chinese, are actually workin in US.
China is mainly relying on cheap labor. When Chinese labor is not cheap enough, the money will move the cheaper countries.
If you take a look at stp, ldk, jaso, yinli, solf (stock symbol), you will find that chinese are not doing thin film. Dr. Shi tried but ended with stopping this year at a loss of millions of usd
Majority of solar cells China makes today are based on amorphous silicon actually, whcih is extremely inefficient.
To boost the efficiency, people can use polysilicon, naowire-based silicon, materials in III-V group. In addition, the light should be focused onto teh active area, which requires tracing of the sun. In any case, the technology is not ready yet.
Mass producing low efficient solar cells today is not economic.
Thanks for your comments. Actually, I think Chinese solar cell companies are not making any mone, either. The only reason they can survive is that they reply on government subsidies. This is not very healthy.
I still think China should focus on solar cell research as well.
This shows the systematic adavantage of USA over china. Right now, both private industry and the DOE does not want to promote solar cell PRODUCTION, since the technology is not mature yet. Every time you generate 1 kwhr of electricity, you need to spend 20c. In other words, you lose 10c. Instead, private industry's DOE's focus is on solar cell TECHNOLOGY development. This is why you need a MARKET economy to stop vanity projects.
Once Us thinks the technology is matured, the money will flow in immeduately. Production will skyrocket right away in US.
