紅河谷歌詞的變遷

一塊有稜有角的石頭，扔到河裡，時間長了，就變成圓潤光滑的卵石。一首有稜有角的民歌，在時間的長河裡，往往變成圓潤光滑的流行曲。《紅河谷》可能是很多人最熟悉的一首加拿大民歌，它現在的中文歌詞是這樣的：

人們說,你就要離開村莊，我們將懷念你的微笑。

你的眼睛比太陽更明亮，照耀在我們的心上。

走過來坐在我的身旁，不要離別的這樣匆忙；

要記住紅河谷你的故鄉，還有那熱愛你的姑娘。

這樣的歌詞老少咸宜，但並不是最初的歌詞。《紅河谷》這首歌產生於1870年紅河谷叛亂之後，加拿大立國不久，不斷向西擴張。當時紅河谷流域住着很多法國人和當地土著通婚的美第斯人(Metis)。加拿大政府的擴張損害到當地美第斯人和土著的利益，當地人於是反叛政府，史稱紅河谷叛亂。聯邦政府派兵鎮壓，平叛結束後，政府軍撤回。巜紅河谷》描述的是一位混血的美第斯姑娘（歌中的 half-breed）愛上即將離開的政府軍士兵。歌中姑娘所迷戀的，並不是現在中文版中，離開故鄉的小伙子，而是遠方前來鎮壓她父兄的純種白人。

關於紅河谷叛亂，我們不能不提一下叛亂的領導人李爾，他後來被處以絞刑。但一百多年後的今天，隨着土著人和美第斯人的地位日益提高，他成為美第斯人的殉難者。如果大家看到美第斯人的活動廣告，上面經常有個留八字鬍的年青人，他就是李爾。

和很多流傳久遠的民歌一樣，《紅河谷》也是社會大動盪時期的產物，下面是這首歌早期的歌詞：

O consider awhile ere you leave me,

Do not hasten to bid me adieu,

But remember the Red River Valley,

And the half-breed that loved you so true.

It's a long time, you know, I've been waiting

For the words that you never did say,

But alas! all my fond hopes have vanished,
