Former United Nations Ambassador Susan Rice (D) is warning corporations and other entities that “take a knee” to President Trump to expect to be “held accountable” if Democrats return to power. “If these corporations think that the Democrats, when they come back in power, are going to, you know, play by the old rules, and, you know, say, ‘Oh, never mind. We’ll forgive you for all the people you fired, all the policies and principles you’ve violated, all, you know, the laws you’ve skirted.’ I think they’ve got another thing coming,” Rice told Preet Bharara, former U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, on Thursday on the “Stay Tuned with Preet” podcast. Rice, who served in the administrations of former Presidents Obama and Biden, ripped law firms, universities, media companies and corporations for acting in “very short-term self-interest” by bowing to pressure from Trump. She predicted an “accountability agenda” awaited those entities, forecasting an electoral shift in the upcoming midterm elections. “You know, companies already are starting to hear they better preserve their documents. They better be ready for subpoenas. If they’ve done something wrong, they’ll be held accountable, and if they haven’t broken the law, good for them,” Rice said. “This is not going to be an instance of, you know, forgive and forget. The damage that these people are doing is too severe to the American people and to our national interest,” she continued. Rice pointed to waning public approval for Trump’s economic and immigration policies in making her case, suggesting the president’s agenda was “not popular” with Americans. The Trump administration has been working to sharpen its messaging on the economy ahead of the midterms, hoping that spotlighting affordability will pull attention away from the president’s controversial immigration crackdown. Trump’s hard-line stance helped deliver him to victory in the 2024 presidential election, but some Republicans have grown concerned in recent weeks that the issue has become a political liability following the deaths of two U.S. citizens at the hands of federal officers in Minneapolis last month. That pair of shootings brought renewed scrutiny to the tactics being used in federal immigration operations. It also sparked widespread protests, including plans for another round of nationwide “No Kings” demonstrations next month. Rice on Thursday applauded the effort, while calling for “much broader and much more sustained” action. “The people of Minnesota, above all, have shown us how bravely … it is possible to come together and to have an impact, and to do so through peaceful, nonviolent, mass protest,” she said. “So, I think that is a very important sign, and I think it will have knock-on effects in many other parts of the country.”
