新的“F WORD”

英語中的“F WORD”常常在深夜的成人電視、廣播節目中出現，是個不雅之詞。中小學的電腦上大多裝有過濾軟件，遇到帶有“F－－－”忌詞的網頁，過濾軟件就會拒絕顯示這個網頁內容。2006年，聯邦通信委員會（FCC）規定，F WORD 等不雅語言不能在上午六點到晚上十點之間的電視節目裡出現，以免兒童受到“精神污染”。當然從廣義上說，任何以字母Ｆ打頭的單詞都可以叫 F WORD。但是，如果有人說“四個字母的 F WORD”，十有八九是指那個“臭名昭著”的英文單詞。
由於美國經濟滑坡，政府經費縮減，一個新的“F WORD” 進入了人們的職業生活：FURLOUGH，意思是“臨時解僱”，伍加曾把它翻譯為“歇工”，參見 http://blog.creaders.net/invictus/user_blog_diary.php?did=33431。這個F WORD 雖然與性和色情無關，但它也象上面提到的那個有四個字母的不雅單詞一樣不受歡迎。
喬治亞州公立大學系統董事會於2009年8月13日決定，每個教職員工都必須在新的學年裡（2009年7月1日－－2010年6月30日）歇工六天。這個強制性歇工政策以年收入23660美圓為界，年工資低於23660美圓的人不必歇工；年收入在23751美圓到24219美圓之間的人必須按照下表規定的方式歇工：

年收入在 24219 美圓以上的人必須至少歇工六天。這個政策還規定，各個大學的校長有權決定哪些人可以免於歇工。我們學校的校長今天宣布，只有學校警察不受“強制性歇工政策”的影響，其他人，上至校長，下至臨時工，概莫能外。有意思的是，教師們可以自己決定歇工的日期，但是不能因為歇工而取消上課。也就是說，老師不能在有課的時間內歇工。有人提問：我們能在歇工時照常來辦公室工作嗎？回答是否定的：在歇工時不能工作，也不能為學校提供其它無償服務。
鑑於這個“強制性歇工政策”肯定要對教學造成影響，老師們決定在課程教學大綱（syllabus）中添加如下的段落：
＂By mandate of the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia, all faculty must take 3 furlough days during the Fall 2009 Semester and 6 before the close of the academic year, which ends in early May 2010. On any furlough day, we are forbidden from working on courses and other business compensated through our academic salary. To comply, I plan to take between 3 and 6 days during the Fall 2009 Semester. I will not take off any days that any of my courses meet (e.g.,Tuesday and Thursday). I will attempt to inform my students of the days that I plan to take as furlough. The likely impact on students in my courses is that they will probably need to wait longer for feedback on assignments, responses to emails, etc. Regardless, I will continue to strive to provide feedback on assignments within 1 to 2 weeks and reply to emails within 1 to 2 business days, where furlough days are not included as business days. Thank you in advance for your understanding in this matter.＂
這段話的大意是：遵照校方的規定，我可能在本學期歇工３－６天。雖然課程不會取消，但返回作業、回答電郵的時間可能由於歇工而延長。對於由此而引起的不便，希望學生給以諒解。
禍兮福所倚，福兮禍所伏。明年多出六天休假日，得好好計劃一下如何有效利用這六天。上帝在六天內就造出了世界上的萬事萬物，伍加不才，在這歇工的六天裡，怎麼着也能造出一堆垃圾吧？
