諺語入門 – 從英語諺語看時事

成語 (Idioms) 和諺語 (Proverbs) 的區別，在於諺語是“民間智慧”提煉成的短句，其意義通常不言而明。

英語成語和漢語成語有一個不同：漢語成語通常已經有動詞，故可以當“獨立句子”運用，而英語成語通常缺少動詞，要當作句子中的一部分用，比如“破釜沉舟”是完整的句子，但 "a dime a dozen" 需要造成句子後才有完整的意思。

下面介紹十句常見諺語：

1. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.
絕對權力絕對導致腐敗。

此諺語來自英國理論學家艾科頓 Lord Acton，他說：

"Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.
Great men are almost always bad men."

2. The early bird gets the worm.
“早起的鳥兒有蟲吃”。

3. A chain is only as strong as its weakest link.
有點“下梁不正，上梁完蛋”的意思吧？

4. A fool and his money are soon parted.
“一日暴富，一月報窮”。

5. You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink.
牽馬近水易，逼馬飲水難，亦有“強人所難，徒勞無功”的意思。

6. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.
此諺語來自英國作家博拍 (Alexander Pope) 的論文“論批評”
(On Criticism)。略有“淺學誤人”或“一知半解很危險”之意。

7. Throwing the baby out with the bathwater.
“良莠不分一起拋棄”。

8. A person is known by the company he keeps.
“近朱者赤，近墨者黑”。

9. A picture is worth a thousand words.
“一圖值千言”。

10. Familiarity breeds contempt.
“近而生厭”。
