不用怕,小心点儿用就行! 英语“screw”这个字的原意是“螺丝钉”,可是在现代英语很多有“screw” 这个字的句子里,“螺丝钉”已没有直接字面意思。 举个例子: “Screw up” 是很常见的动词。它有两个普通用法。这两个用法有几乎相反的意思。 1. I have to “screw up my courage” to ask the boss for a raise. 我必须鼓起勇气向老板要求加薪。 2. John screwed up the whole project. Now it’s one big mess. I have to find another person to straighten everything up. 约翰把项目(工程,等等)搞的一团糟,我必须找另一个人来改好它。 现在来解释为什么用“screw”时要格外小心。 有些字在日常应用英语里因为被流行文化所“劫持”,挂上有点歪的意义,比如“gay”,原来有“快乐”,“高兴”的意思的,现在却被用来形容“同性恋”。 “Screw”这个字也一样被“劫持”了。现在它有这几种用法: 1.Peter likes to screw around; if I were you I’d stay away from him. 彼得是个好沾花惹草的人。你还是躲开他好些吧! 2. Walter has been screwed by his business partners. They took all his money and ran away. 沃尔特被生意伙伴欺骗了。他们偷了沃尔特的钱逃之夭夭。 3. What you just said is ridiculous. I’m afraid you have a screw loose. 你这话很荒谬,头脑有点儿不正常吧? 4. The whole situation is really screwy. 这整件事很怪。 大家知道"Screw"还有一个不雅的意义,这里不谈了。 |
