一場交鋒：大學裡的奧林匹克運動會論壇
今天中午我去聽了椰公所在的大學裡的“Beijing Olympics Forum”，共有三位panelist，椰公是其中一位。椰公講的主題是這次北京奧運是一次了解中國的極好機會。如果你真的想了解中國，就去中國實地參觀旅遊吧；如果去不了中國，就和身邊的中國人多聊聊天吧，而且中國有許多網站有英文版，可以去看看，不要光看這兒媒體一面倒的宣傳。第二位是社會學教授，本人是香港來美讀書後留下的，講的是香港人的身份的複雜性及由此而導致的對奧運的心態種種，她對港人的心理把握得還是很真實的。最後一位是人類學教授，白人，他的題目是“Boycott Olympic：The International Perspectives and Chinese Perspectives”。
這第三位講者是在新疆做的博士論文，聽說在中國少說也呆過四、五年，還娶了一位中國太太，一年多前做了父親。他的國際視野（International Perspectives）是一邊倒的、我們都早已耳熟能詳的那一套“西方觀點”，他用近十張圖片來印證他的觀點，圖片是來自CNN的鼓吹西藏要獨立的圖片，達賴喇嘛和Nancy Pelosi 會見的春風滿面的照片等等。他的“中國視角”則用了胡佳等異見分子的數張照片，無非是說中國自己的人權組織也是抵制和反對奧運的，奧運使得政府對人民更加壓迫了云云。他顯示的最後一個圖片是，海外中國人也有反對藏獨抵制奧運的、因而是聲援奧運的活動。但是僅僅一張圖片。
我想任何做老師的人都明白，圖片是有勝於語言和文字的力量的。他這樣集中性地選擇一邊倒的圖片，其用心昭然若揭了。但是因為這一切發生在眼前，不是電視或電台里，斯文的着裝，似乎彬彬有禮的談吐下，說出來的卻是這樣具有太過明顯的偏差性的一邊倒的話，雖然我有過預感，但還是為他太落入俗套而失望啊。為什麼在這樣一個也算難得、可以進行溝通的正式場合，就產生不了一個願意說些公道話的西方學者呢？
聽着，我覺得血都要涌到我臉上了，心跳加快，我想起這兩個月來在萬維的討論，網友的名字一個個閃過心中；那邊教授已經講完了，主持人（她自己也是有明顯偏差的政府學教授）讓大家提問，別人問些不痛不癢的問題後，我控制住自己的情緒，問道：
“You show us the international perspectives and the Chinese perspective, I think we all agree that every society has its weakness. Would you show us more about Chinese perspectives? In your presentation, you only show those dissidents’ perspective. And Chinese is not just those people, what are the ordinary Chinese people’s opinions? You mention human rights, for whom, should human rights for all of the people or the majority of ordinary people rather than a selected small group of people?”
這位人類學教授避開我詢問的眼神，有些不自然地說：“Chinese people’s opinion is regional. Beijing people are highly critical about Chinese government.”我說：“They are highly critical towards the government, it doesn’t mean that they are highly critical towards Olympics. Olympics is a great sport event, it belongs to the whole world, not just China.”
那教授聽到最後一句，說是啊，This is a fantastic point. Olympics is a sport event, 但是他話鋒一轉，又說but all in all, it is highly politicized now both by international perspective and Chinese perspective.
這叫什麼話？你的Chinese perspective本身就是極為單薄的，叫異見分子角度還差不多，我完全可以猜到他自己的立場，但礙於場面（因為我之前聽說過，校方早些時曾提醒他不要明確提倡抵制奧運，因這個學校有近50、60個中國學生，怕傷害這些學生感情，斷了今後“財路”），他才說了似乎折中的話，就是這些折中的話其實也是經不起推敲的。奧運精神是友誼與運動並重，是誰要把它政治化？是普通民眾嗎？事情弄成今天的局面，主要是中國政府還是西方各國政府要它這樣？作為一個學者，連起碼的魚和水（即環境和個體）的分類都弄不清楚，或者連地區和國的範疇都不去劃分，眉毛鬍子一把抓的，拿着一些北京市民的意見來代表全中國地說事，拿着西方媒體報道時最喜歡拿來利用的幾個中國的人權“寶貝”說事。
觀眾中有兩個坐在一起的人相繼提問，先生說：“Olympics is a big stage, everybody wants to make a point. And the media is using this psychology, every country is ranked, so media has an extremely important spot here. So the media attract more and more attention, and it is corrupted. We should be aware how the media is making up stories.
女士說：其實這些問題（即人權或環境污染問題）美國也有，各國都有，既然如此，為什麼要抵制奧運在中國開？
我馬上表示完全贊同，我說：“We shall reflect on what role does Media play in ordinary people’s life to learn and perceive another country. It is true that Chinese people hold some stereotypical views of Western media because they provide too many biased news reports. But American people are also holding stereotypical views about China. Even the Western opinions are diversified, but do we really see the diversity of opinions revealed in our media here? No! So when people here cry for ‘Chinese people please be open minded’, I do think we American people here shall be open minded too, we shall be willing to know about another culture without prejudging too much. And only by then, people can have the true communication.”
觀眾席中大學的國際招生辦公室主任暗暗說：“好！”，剛才發言的先生和女士連點頭，說“We are with her。”我說謝謝你們！
奇怪的是，在座有三十個人左右，其中僅有三、四個中國學生，不知是什麼原因，是沒聽懂，還是不敢提問，反正沒有人提一個問題或說些評論性的話。我對此也有點失望。
We are with her，畢竟在一群人中，總有明白人。我稍許有些寬慰。
這就是發生在西北一個地區性大學中的真實場景,沒有誇張和虛構。這也是現實的一個角落。正是無數類似於此和不同於此的角落，構成美國社會的全景圖。
