2021年1月6日国会山暴乱时，特勤局的人两次以保护为名“请”彭斯副总统上一台轿车，被他拒绝了。拒绝的表面原因：副总统熟悉的特勤局工作人员Tim并不随行开车。实际原因：不能离开国会山，直到认证程序完成。

试想：如果彭斯上了车，车开走了，恐怕永远就见不到他了。没有了副总统，2020总统大选结果的最后认证就无法于1月6日完成，当时的总统就会宣布紧急状态，动用戒严法，并以副总统不在为由停止权力交接。之后的事就很难说了。

外面组织闹事，里面安排转移；闹事的乱中有序，安排的有板有眼；里外遥相呼应，处处透着诡异。此事丝丝入扣，颇有精心策划的味道。彭斯与死神擦肩而过，好险啊。

"I'm not leaving the Capitol," Pence said. He refused to get into an armored limousine. 

"I trust you, Tim, but you're not driving the car," Pence told his lead security agent, Tim Giebels. "If I get in that vehicle, you guys are taking off. I'm not getting in the car."
