兒子他們的英文寫作課有一個大的 project, 叫Multi-Genre Project,要求學生用各種寫作文體(Flashing fiction, Mental movie, Character Profile, Dialogue or IM Conversation, Visual Element with captions, 以及Free-Verse Poems) 來描述自己作為八年級學生的生活。下面是兒子寫的 A Day in the Life of an Eighth Grader - A Survival Guide。雖然有些誇張和調侃,但還是可以從中對初中生的一日生活窺見一斑。 6:45 Get up! Get up! Yes, get off your back and go brush your teeth, slowpoke. No one really cares if you are still tired. 7:00 Breakfast: Peanut butter, toast and an orange. What a surprise! 7:15 Catch the bus before its too late. Time waits for no man ,,, or teen. 7:16-7:25 Catch some sleep on the bus or else school will murder you.Just think of a happy place and ignore the chatter of obnoxious sixth-graders in the background and you pass off just fine 7:41 The bell rings initiating the start of school as you head to orchestra How about a little bit of out-of-tune music to start your day? ........... 12:10 March to death. Yes, thats right... Ms. Quinns class (Ms. Quinn 教social studies , 大概因為很boring, 孩子們都拿她的課開玩笑) Dun, Dun, Dun! No one shall survive! 1:00 Lunch time. Get in line before the sacred cheese-stuffed breadsticks are all taken. Its survival of the fittest as you savagely fight for food! 3:15 School is over. Get on the bus, talk to friends, and go home. Ah, relief. 4:00 Watch TV till your brain hurts. Then ride your bike to no apparent place for any apparent reason 5:00 Homework time. Lets get that piece of work out of the way early. 6:00 Dinner of ... rice and noodles, lovely. 7:00 Violin lessons on Mondays and Chess lessons on Tuesdays. Bring a thought along so you dont have to listen to the teachers boring lectures. (Enter my mom: "What? I thought you like these lessons!") 8:00 Try once again and fail to defeat Guitar Hero on Expert Mode 9:00 Read "War and Peace" till you doze off ..... But I still have 200 pages to go till the end of the book! 10:00 Good night. Get plenty of sleep so you can start the "wonderful" cycle again tomorrow.... :) (老師的評語:"I really like this survival guide. I love that you incorporated wit and sarcasm". 這位老師是兒子所有老師裡面最年輕的一個,她自己就是這所初中畢業的,所以好多兒子的其他老師以前也是她的老師。她也因此和兒子他們沒有什麼“代溝”,是孩子們能夠輕鬆相處的老師) 下面是同一個project 裡面的另外一個部分,是一首叫做“Where I am From" 的詩歌,要求作者在詩里寫出自己的一些特別的identity and origin. 從中可以看出兒子的一些正在發展的自我意識,我覺得滿有意思的。 Where I am From I am from music From violins and guitars to iPod and CDs I am from the picture-perfect frame of the new basement Once a vacant hall (*) I am from the white tint of December snow (**) The cold chill of a winter day (too cold for me) I am from superior minds, from my parents to my brother and to myself I am from vacations overseas and the sometimes arguments of random reasons (***) From "Get up" and "Get going" I am from atheism, or at least thats how it used to be I am from America as a pure Asian (****) From countless family stories, the copious details about a different life in China I am from the drawers of photos my family cherishes, never to be forgotten even when desired to be I am from life now, looking forward to change.
