这一阵贴了不少古典音乐的东西，有朋友问我是不是对流行音乐不屑一顾。哪能呢，本人对美国的流行音乐还是很喜欢滴，当然这主要得归功于儿子们。没有他们和他们的iPod，我可能对美国流行歌星的了解还会停留在猫王，休斯顿，和杰克迅这些“老牌明星”上面。不过，听得不少，并不意味着都喜欢。加上我这个人比较迂腐，对那些菲闻多多，个人生活乱七八糟的明星，有着本能的排斥，所以像什么小甜甜之类的一概不感冒。这样一筛下来，真正喜欢的歌手也就没有多少了。其中最喜欢的，应该数来自加拿大的乡村歌手Shania Twain. 比起和她同时的几个大牌歌手，她比Celion Dion 多了一份自然，比Mariah Carey多了几分纯真，加上个人生活的低调，非常合乎我的“口味”。
说起来，她和 Celion Dion 有很多共同点，两人都来自加拿大，都有一个大家庭，都和自己的代理人结婚，而且都是对感情完全投入，信奉从一而终的女人；不同的是 Shania的家庭背景差很多 -- 她继父是一位加拿大印第安人；从小家境贫穷，十几岁的时候就离家到多伦多一边打零工一边写歌唱歌；而在她二十岁出头的那年，继父和母亲车祸去世，作为大女儿的她 不得不挑起养育弟弟妹妹的重任，到处“卖唱”养家，直到后来一举成名，才摆脱了这样的生活状态；而Dion虽然也很早就出道，但作为一个音乐世家的宝贝小女儿，她的生活要单纯得多。这可能也是两个人后来对待名气的方式不同的原因之一吧. 她们俩还有一点不同的是，Shania 几乎所有的歌曲都是她自己写的，而Celion 则很少这样。这也是我更佩服Shania的原因。她是真正意义上的“音乐人”，而不是只是一个歌手。(Of course 这在西方的流行音乐人中是很常见的，比如Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilira, Beyonce 等都自己写歌词和作曲)
说Shania 是乡村歌手，其实是没有太多道理的。因为她后期早就已经成为所谓的“cross over"，音乐的风格介于乡村和轻摇滚之间，而不是那种让人一听就想到牛仔帽和赛马场的“乡村歌手”。这个趋势似乎在这几年十分突出，当然与连着几个当红“乡村歌手”横空出世不无关系，比如两年前的“美国偶像”胜出者Carrie Underwood (这里链接的一首This is Just a Dream写的是一个准新娘接到未婚夫战死疆场的情景，让人落泪) ; 去年暴红的，长着一张可爱的娃娃脸的十八岁歌手Taylor Swift等，都是以乡村歌手出道，但无论其舞台形象还是歌曲的风格，都比以前的乡村歌手要现代得多。也许这种灵活性正是乡村音乐作为一个艺术流派得以生存的原因之一吧。

说到艺人和作品的关系，我这人可能是另类。不是说一定要“见见那个下蛋的母鸡”，只是如果一个艺人品行很差或者个人生活乱七八糟，是肯定会影响我对他/她作品的impressions. That's why I don't like Zhang Bozhi at all, but admire Wang Fei, even though they are seen by many people as very similar in personal styles or singing styles (of cousre, I know very little about Chinese pop stars today :). My impressions are mostly from the "headline news" that you can't even fail to notice these days.

Is this from another song? You have to forgive me, I'm pretty dense actually when it comes to pop songs, unlike my kids, who can recognize the song from the first three notes and can memorize many lyrics from start to end :).
