Gustavo Dudamel is the biggest thing right now in classical music. I would love to hear him.
I always thought Lang Lang was over the top too. But recently I listened to his "Remembrance" CD and I found the Mozart sonana (K330) very tenderly rendered.
I love Yundi Li as well and think it is great China has produced two such great artists each with his own distinctive style.
No, I do not play any instrument but I do enjoy appreciate a lot of them - violin is my favorite, as well as piano. For example, I have collected about 30 recordings for Beethoven's violin concerto in D with different violin masters and contemporary players. I like Grumiaux and Milstein the most. I also have at least 5 complete sets of Beethoven (32) and Mozart (20) piano sonatas, as well as many great players with some individual piano pieces. My total collection is approaching 2000 titles. Classical music has accompanied with my life since I was in my teenage. It really makes my life much more enjoyable!
Wow! A real 发烧友!Hope when you visit Chicago next time they'll have some great concerts for you to see! I think after Daniel Barenboim left last year, CSO is just using various guest directors for the time being. It's great to have many different styles from other places in the world, but I hope they find their next director soon so they can have some new initiatives and directions for the future.
I like Yundi Lee more because I think he is working hard and becomes a real performing artist. Lang Lang may have very rear talent but I think he is wasting them. He does not have time and willingness to improve his artistic style so that his technique will be exhausted very soon. I intended to see him in an upcoming concert at SF next spring but I changed my mind just purchase a CD instead.
Last time when I was in Chicago, the CSO was not in season so I missed the chance to listen to them in life. I still hope that I will have a chance in the future. I have collected many CDs including some that performed by CSO. I like Reiner the best. Solti was also excellent After Solti, CSO's artistic level seems not keeping up as usual.
I went to LA two weeks ago and attended a concert at Walter Disney Concert Hall. The concert Hall was first class but the conductor was not up to the bar (a young lady assistant conductor). She managed Brahms double concerto in such a mess, I cannot believe the sound was coming from LA Philharmonic. The second half was Dvorak's 9th symphony which improved a bit in terms of the performance. What a shame! It is said that LA philharmonic has hired a brilliant rising star who is only 26 years old from Venezuela. He will start his tenure in 2009 season. I am looking forward to hearing him with LAP.
