萬斯使用 "Peasant"這個詞就是歧視
某天我從球館回家路上，聽到洛杉磯中文1300電台里的節目裡，有一個人打電話進去說：我兩次總統大選都投川普的票，可萬斯最近說中國人是鄉巴佬，可把我氣壞了。原本對萬斯寄予很大希望，川普年齡太老而萬斯年輕，二者結合老少搭配可以保證共和黨執政八年。可萬斯這傢伙這樣侮辱歧視中國人，真沒有想到。
回頭查了查，萬斯最近在電視訪談中的原話是這樣的：
“我們向中國農民借錢，購買中國農民製造的東西。”
英文： “We borrow money from Chinese peasants to buy the things those Chinese peasants manufacture.”.
萬斯這段話的爭議主要在他使用的農民這個詞 “peasant ”上。有中文媒體將其翻譯為鄉巴佬，認為是對中國人的歧視，也有人認為peasant 英翻漢就是農民，中國後文革時代的經濟繁榮世界工廠地位，中國農民為主力軍，此話沒有錯。
我洛杉磯老朋友微信發言：
“Vance 的原話是“We borrow money from Chinese peasants to buy the things those Chinese peasants manufacture.”. 不管怎麼說，Vance 從來不是我的“cup of tea”,我也很奇怪為什麼耶魯會教育出這樣一個怪物。但我認為他這句話沒有錯，講述了一個事實，就是GD的經濟成就就是建立在剝削中國農民基礎之上的。”
我100%同意老朋友指出的事實：共產黨中國的經濟成就建立在剝削中國農民基礎之上。
不過我認為，萬斯此言沒有一點點揭露此一事實的意思。萬斯此言中使用"peasant"這個詞，與川普稱希拉里為臭娘們（nasty woman), 把來自非洲移民稱之為來自屎洞shithole國家, 把新冠病毒 coronavirus命名為 Kung Flu （功夫諧音），把加拿大總理特魯多稱為州長“governer”, 也與萬斯輕蔑地把英法盟友稱之為隨機國家 “random countries”，一脈相承如出一轍，統統都是以侮辱他人他族他國，激發極端MAGA基本盤的政治動員，當然也是他們人格品質的表現，這樣說他們覺得爽。
把川普萬斯之流定義為美國250年來政治人物中，最擅長人身攻擊的粗鄙語言大師，一點也不冤枉。
我在國內70年代初次接觸英語時，最先學到的幾個單詞就有農民"peasant"，與此同時學到的另一個詞是：無產階級“proletariat”。這兩個詞常常在課文中一起用，因為那個時代很多英文課本都是革命政治口號，喊政治口號就離不開這兩個單詞。
來到美國後，很奇怪從來沒有聽過或者見過人們使用這個單詞，經常聽到的農民的英語單詞就是Farmer，有時候與美國朋友聊天議論使用"peasant"這個詞描述農民，他們都會有一種困惑的表情。
語言最深奧的地方是涉及文化的部分。你可以熟練使用某種語言，但你不一定可以感受文化部分。而文化部分中最難明白的一個是幽默，另一個就是侮辱性歧視性的語言表達。
經常在萬維里活動的網友們大多50以上，中文好過英文, 英文都是第二語言，所以談到英語語言文化部分時要謹慎，不要自以為是，不要想當然。
