        在纽约“新紫衫树之地”居住的那四五年，我们对多米尼加“属于主”共和国并不陌生——那些散落街巷的移民，带着梅伦格“蛋白酥”(Merengue)的狂潮与巴恰塔“派对”(Bachata)的浪漫，沿着七号地铁线铺展开来。10年后，我们乘着音乐的翅膀，来到罗马纳“罗马人”城内的查翁“神慈”高地(Altos de Chavón)工匠村——一座16世纪西班牙风格的文化小镇。查翁高地坐落在查翁河畔，鹅卵石拼花铺就的路面硬朗光润，低矮的古朴街灯与高大的棕榈树错落有致。石灰岩砌成的美术馆、图书馆、地中海餐厅与工艺店处处藏着惊喜；考古博物馆里，哥伦布“鸽子”之前的印第安人手工艺品静静陈列，诉说着这片土地的古老文明。圣斯坦尼斯劳斯“尊贵”教堂(St. Stanislaus Church)因教皇曾到访而更名，几匹毛驴驮着比娃儿大不了多少的主人朝我们走来——娃儿见了这稀罕物，竟利索地骑上驴背，对着镜头努嘴得意洋洋。村子另一角，是一座5,000席的古罗马式露天剧场，弗兰克·辛纳屈“自由人·元老”(Frank Sinatra)与宠物店男孩(Pet Shop Boys)都曾在此献艺。从罗马纳前往首都途中，顺道瞥了一眼圣佩德罗·德·马科里斯“磐石·战神”(San Pedro de Marcoris)——那个出了76位棒球明星的“游击手摇篮”，可街景看去却丝毫未见翻身的光景。

        首都多明各“圣主”作为政治经济中心已有500多年历史。1492年哥伦布登上新大陆后，泰诺“和平”族(Taíno)和阿拉瓦克“友善”族(Arawak)土著便在此建起了第一座教堂、医院与城堡；1498年西班牙式方块街区初具规模，1990年列入《世界遗产名录》。昔日的耶稣会修道院如今是国家万神殿，哥伦布之子迭戈的摩尔“北非穆斯林”式宫殿已改作博物馆，陈列着16世纪的西班牙生活器具。哥伦布灯塔是为纪念发现新大陆500周年而建的大型十字形纪念馆，据说哥伦布遗体便安放于此，士兵严守，我们只能远远观望。多米尼加国宫是新古典主义佛罗伦萨“花城”式三层建筑，乃首脑办公之地；中国大使馆近在咫尺，美国大使馆几乎就是邻居。圣母化身大教堂有近500年历史，是美洲最早的圣殿——哥特式的尖顶、拱肋、飞券透着宗教的虔诚，绘画与木雕又烘托出本土文化，哥伦布遗体正是从这里移至灯塔安息的。也许因为与古巴同属西班牙殖民地，正宗古巴雪茄在这里铺天盖地。当地人喜欢围坐一起，边品咖啡边叼雪茄聊天。我们也想赶一回时髦，带些回美国作稀罕礼物——只盼下次能顺道去古巴看看。

        在哥伦布灯塔前，我站了一会儿。那些被围墙隔开、被卫兵看守、被铁栅栏栏住的东西，往往是时间层层包裹后留下的最外层痕迹。时间在这里被精心包裹，以博物馆、纪念馆和灯塔的形式，被重新陈列、重新命名、重新出售给每一个前来寻找它的人。而真正的哥伦布，或许已经不在任何一座建筑里，正躺在一艘早已不存在了的、正被海浪反复修改的航线中，沿着一条已经不存在于任何地图、却仍被不断航行的路线，在那些未被记录、未被批准、未被转化为纪念品出售的角落里，以更接近原貌的方式，被那些尚在航行中的人，通过各自的经纬度，更新着出发的意义。我不知道未来是否真能去成古巴，但此刻站在这个十字形建筑前，我确切地感到自己正被一段更漫长、更复杂的旅程承载着，向着一个尚未命名却已经知道自己名字的坐标靠近。风继续从加勒比海面上刮来，以它不变的速度和方向，继续为那些尚未抵达、却已经知道自己名字的坐标，拂开一条看不见的航线。而那些被带走、被点燃、被记住的，终将以另一种形式被消化，成为一截可以随时剥开、重新卷起的记忆——在未来的夜晚，在某个不属于这里的阳台上，被重新点燃，被吸进肺部，再变成一缕向上飘散、持续变淡的烟，最后进入风中，被风吸收，成为等待下一个来访者的另一种形态，继续在空气中盘旋，等待被重新吸入，等待被新的气息继续传递。

        1990年，圣多明各殖民城载入联合国教科文组织《世界遗产名录》。
