Jalāl ad-Dīn Mohammad Rūmī (1207—1273)

      Soul, if you want to learn secrets,

      your heart must forget about

      shame

            and dignity.

      You are God’s lover,

      yet you worry

      what people

      are saying.

      The same wind that uproots trees

      makes the grass shine.

      The lordly wind loves the weakness

      and the lowness of grasses.

      Never brag about being strong.

      The axe doesn’t worry about how thick the branches are.

      It cuts them to pieces. But not the leaves.

      It leaves the leaves alone.

      You’re water. We’re the millstone.

      You’re wind. We’re dust blown up into shapes.

      You’re spirit. We’re the opening and closing

      of our hands. You’re the clarity.

      We’re the language that tries to say it.

      You’re a joy. We’re all the different kinds of laughing.

            灵魂，如果你想知道秘密，

            那就必须忘记羞耻和尊严。

            你爱真理，

            却担心人们的议论。

            风将大树连根拔起

            也使小草生机盎然

            高上的风怜爱小草的柔弱卑微

            从不鼓吹刚强

            斧头不怕树干有多粗

            照样把它们劈的粉碎

            但树叶却安然无恙

            你是水，我们就是磨石。

            你是风，我们就是被侵蚀的岩石。

            你是精神，所以我们用双手做祷告。

            你是清晰，

            所以我们想用语言把你描述。

            你是欢乐，所以我们是各种各样的笑声。
