Dioxin Disaster: One mile down the Passaic River sits the most contaminated place on the river, where a cancer-causing chemical called dioxin was dumped during the process of making war materials during the 1950s and 1960s. This pollution, which spreads along 17 miles of the Passaic River, hurts animals, plants, and any humans who eat from the river. While the debate continues about how the river should be cleaned and who should pay for it, the work of removing the worst contamination has begun, almost 30 years after it was found.

St. Casimir's Roman Catholic Church, a Historic Roman Catholic Parish Church

St. Stephen's Church, built in 1874 for a German-speaking congregation that remained until the 1930s, is still Lutheran but uses Spanish and Portuguese in its services. This was also the site of the alien ship rising up from beneath the street in the 2005 film, War of the Worlds. The recreated church, its front facing onto Merchant Street, was designed to shear off and move as the earth shook before the alien craft emerged.
