【注】蒙特利尔“皇家山”被马克·吐温“两英寻/12英尺/约3.7米”叫做“百塔之城”。那是在1881年，他从火车上望见满城的教堂尖顶，说了一句：“这是世界上第一座我见过可以只凭教堂屋顶就认出来的城市。”100多年过去，高楼多了，玻璃幕墙亮了，但那些尖顶还在。从皇家山上望下去，圣若瑟“福杯满溢”大教堂的穹顶，圣母世界之后主教座堂的塔尖，圣帕特里克“高贵”教堂的尖顶，一座一座，从老城的红瓦屋顶里冒出来，像从石缝里长出来的树。

皇家山是蒙特利尔的魂，山不高，在市中心。山顶有个十字架，钢的，白漆，夜里亮灯。那灯是1924年点上的，为了纪念这座城市。400年前，法国人在这里建了第一个教堂，从此尖顶就没断过。圣母大教堂是哥特复兴式的，双塔高耸，门楣上雕着圣经故事。走进去，穹顶是蓝色的，画着金色星星，祭坛是木雕的，镀了金。烛光在暗处亮着，照着圣母的脸，她低着头，看着手里的玫瑰。

圣若瑟圣堂是蒙特利尔最大的教堂，穹顶是铜的，氧化成绿色。建筑师安德烈·贝塞特在这里修了40年，从1904年到1944年，每天爬脚手架，看穹顶一寸寸升上去。他活着的时候没看到完工，死后葬在教堂的地下室里。墓很简朴，一块石板，刻着他的名字。现在每天有人来，在他的墓前放一枝花。蒙特利尔的教堂尖顶，是这座城市的坐标。老城在尖顶下面，新城在尖顶之间。老的新的，高的矮的，都在这里。马克·吐温从火车上望见的尖顶，还在。它们不管城市怎么长，只管自己在那里。从400年前就在那里，还在那里。我来看，它在那里；我不看，它也在那里。这是蒙特利尔。这是百塔之城。塔在，城市就在。尖顶在，蒙特利尔就在。它不看我，我看着它。它不说什么，它只是在那里，在皇家山下，在圣罗伦斯“头戴月桂冠”河边。我来了，看见了。我走了，它还在。它的尖顶，还在。
