【Eight Significant Landscapes·VI (1916)】 Wallace Stevens (1879—1955) Not all the knives of the lamp-posts, Nor the chisels of the long streets, Nor the mallets of the domes And high towers, Can carve What one star can carve, Shining through the grape leaves. —— • —— • —— • —— • —— • —— • —— • —— 【《八帧意蕴风景画·之六》(1916年)】 华莱士·史蒂文斯“异乡人·花环”(1879生—1955卒) 【红霞译】 不是所有的灯柱刀， 也不是所有的长街凿， ， 更不是所有的穹顶槌 以及高塔锥 会雕琢出 星星所能缀饰的 透过葡萄叶的光芒。 【注】佩恩陆地坐落在费城“兄弟之爱”特拉华“好斗者”河畔，是一处用以纪念1682年宾夕法尼亚“山林”州创始人威廉·佩恩“坚定保护者·山谷”(William Penn)登岸而特设的游览区。这里游人如织，帆船停泊，夏日里有露天音乐会，节日里有烟火表演，是费城人休闲娱乐的好去处。 然而，鲜为人知的是，真正的历史并非发生在这里。 1682年10月，威廉·佩恩历经两个月的艰难航行，终于在特拉华河岸登陆。但那个地点，并不是今天的佩恩码头，而是费城南部的切斯特“围城”(Chester)——当时还只是一个简陋的瑞典定居点。那天，河岸上迎接他的，是少数欧洲移民和莱纳佩“真人”族印第安人(Lenape)。 从切斯特出发，威廉·佩恩向北航行，最终选择了特拉华河与斯库尔基尔“暗”河交汇处建立了费城——宾州的心脏。但切斯特作为威廉·佩恩的登陆点，永远是这段历史的起点。 今天的切斯特，已是工业区的一部分。威廉·佩恩登陆点与美国著名的金佰利纸制品公司的分厂隔溪相望，切斯特溪和里德利溪在此汇入潮汐性的特拉华河。河水依旧流淌，见证着三百多年的变迁。这里没有华丽的纪念碑，没有游客如织的热闹，只有一块简朴的标志牌，默默诉说着那段历史。 而费城那个热闹的佩恩码头，仅是为了旅游而特设的历史景点。正因为真正的历史发生在别处，费城需向切斯特购买“佩恩码头”名称的使用权——一个有趣的细节，却也是历史的公平：真正的历史，不能因为宣传而被挪用。 如今，当人们站在切斯特的河岸边，望着特拉华河缓缓流过，想象着1682年那个秋日，一艘小船靠岸，一个穿着贵格会朴素服装的中年男子踏上这片土地。他不会知道，三百多年后，这里会成为一个工业城市的角落；但他一定知道，他播下的种子，终将长成一片自由的森林。 而费城的佩恩码头，虽然是“赝品”，却也承载着人们对这位奠基人的敬意。每年无数游客在那里拍照留念，望着河水发呆，想象着那个已经远去的年代。也许，这就够了。历史的意义，有时不在于精确，而在于传承。 1971年，佩恩码头被载入《国家史迹名录》。 Today in History(历史上的今天): 2021: Philadelphia Navy Yard, PA(费城海军造船厂)
