    Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips, and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.

    Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity of the appetite, for adventure over the love of ease.  This often exists in a man of sixty more than a body of twenty.  Nobody grows old merely by several years.  We grow old by deserting our ideals.

    Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul.  Worry, fear, and self-distrust bow to the heart and turn the spirit back to dust.

    Whether sixty or sixteen, there is in every human being's heart the lure of wonder, the unfailing child-like appetite of what's next, and the joy of the game of living.  In the center of your heart and my heart, there is a wireless station; so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage, and power from men and from the Infinite, so long are you young.

    When the aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old, even at twenty, but as long as your aerials are up, to catch the waves of optimism, there is hope you may die young at eighty.

【注】塞繆爾·烏爾曼“上帝之名·力量”，一個並非家喻戶曉的名字，卻用一篇散文讓“青春”二字穿越了整整一個世紀的時光。他生於1840，逝於1924，一生橫跨兩個世紀，而他那篇題為《青春》的文字，比他活得更久。

這篇散文的中譯版本眾多，各有千秋。但我最喜歡的，還是下面這段對青春本質的詮釋。它不像常見的譯文那樣追求字句的工整對應，而是捕捉住了某種更深的意蘊——那種只有走出青春之後，回望青春時才能懂得的東西。

畢竟，對於已經走出青春的過來人而言，記憶中的青春，總比親身經歷過的青春還要栩栩如生。

“青春不是年華，而是心境，歲月是這日夜交替的時光流轉，帶走了悲與喜，留下了青春獨有的姿態。於是對這青春歲月，我們便多了份感恩，生活不再重複着單調的色彩，發現自己竟被幸福包裹的如此嚴實，有時我們會被現實冷落的，飄蕩的心無所寄託，何不將它附於紙上，青春如詩的年華，筆端流淌的墨，寫不出醉人的美，獨有我心靜品其香。青春的年華固為絢爛，心境的青春依舊精彩，青春意味着勇氣多於怯懦，意味着喜歡冒險而討厭安逸，更意味着青春的日子美倫美煥。即使青春的年華流逝，但我們心境的青春不能老去。”
