                诚然，我们固有一死。

                生活多半事关

                碰巧喜欢，无所谓应该。

                也就是理所当然，为什么

                我碰巧喜欢红色灌木丛、

                灰色草地和绿灰色天空？

                其它呢？除了红、

                灰、绿，为什么那些？

                我可没这么说：

                不是那些。只有那些。

                人们喜欢碰巧喜欢。

                人们喜欢变红的感觉。

                不必担心。

                碰巧喜欢可谓

                事情发生的一种感觉。

【注】诚实公园在19世纪被视作水库广场，因为曾经位于纽约公共图书馆大楼旧址的大型配水库——巴豆(Croton)水库，其东面毗连纽约公共图书馆主分馆，西北角紧靠诚实公园一号(美洲银行大厦)；20世纪70年代又因吸毒者频繁光顾而曾一度被戏称“针头公园”。

每年夏季期间，诚实公园都提供免费户外夜场电影，作为纽约客的我曾于1994年第一次到此夏夜追凉，如同“夜热依然午热同”的旧日跟大萝卜^*一起坐在小马扎上仰望星空下的银幕，无论远在南京半山园还是近在纽约诚实园，碰巧感受“时有微凉不是风”。

1966年，诚实公园被纳入《美国国家史迹名录》。

^*南京人被比作大萝卜，因为南京人没有上海人的精明老练、北京人的个性张扬、温州人的金钱嗅觉、广州人的阔商派头，堪称为人随和的实心眼儿；毕竟南京不及上海的经济繁华、北京的政治地位、温州的竞争创新、广州的快速节奏，所以是杂烩外地人的天堂。
