【注】賓夕法尼亞“山林”州的東部州立教養所坐落在費城“兄弟之愛”市區，從1829年到1971年運營了142年，是世界上第一座現代監獄，也是當時全美規模最大、造價最高的公共建築。它帶着烏托邦式的理想而建——“賓州體制”主張通過單獨拘押與靜思讓囚犯悔改，而非單純的懲罰。新哥特“傾倒”式的城堡建築由哈維蘭“山羊之地”(Haviland)設計，高牆窄窗、幽深走廊，把恐懼與孤獨澆築進石頭裡。這裡關過“疤面煞星”卡彭“首領”(Capone)，他住着鋪地毯、掛壁畫的牢房；也關過挖出97英尺/30米地道的銀行劫匪薩頓“南方家園”(Sutton)。但最耐人尋味的囚犯，是一隻名叫佩普“活力”(Pep)的黑色獵犬——1924年，州長以謀殺罪名將它送進監獄，判處無期徒刑，理由是它咬死了州長夫人的貓。佩普拍了入獄照、按了爪印，編號C-2559，成了正式“囚犯”。可它脾氣友善，陪警衛巡邏，在走廊抓老鼠，舔舐囚犯無力垂下的手，成了整座監獄最溫柔的存在。

我在改建為博物館的走廊里站了很久，光線透過狹小的鐵窗斜斜落在石板地上。卡彭的牢房掛着介紹牌，薩頓的地道入口被玻璃封住，可人們圍得最多的，是佩普的囚犯照——一隻咧嘴的黑狗，像在說它也不知道自己為什麼在這裡。州長送它進來，究竟是懲罰、捐贈，還是公關，已無從知曉。可那隻狗在絕望最集中的地方，成了唯一不需要懺悔的存在。它不審判誰，也不被誰審判，它只是活着，舔一舔那些早已忘了被觸碰是什麼感覺的手。

我站在那張泛黃的囚犯照前，鐵窗的光線落在佩普的相框邊緣，像一道沒有被完全隔斷的邊界。那隻狗的眼神談不上憤怒或悲傷，甚至談不上期待——它只是看着鏡頭，好像並不明白自己為什麼會被拍下這張照片。那一刻我忽然覺得，這座監獄真正的秘密，不是高牆的威嚴，不是地道的奇蹟，而是一隻被當成囚犯的狗用它的存在告訴所有人：也許這裡關押的從來都不是罪，是孤獨。而佩普，那個不知道自己正在坐牢的囚犯，是這堵牆裡唯一自由的活物。它沒有被審判，也沒有被救贖，它只是恰好出現在那裡——在一個被設計來隔絕的世界裡，成為唯一不設防的裂縫。而當我們注視着它那張被捕時留下的照片時，我們並不是在凝視一個可憐的故事，而是在某個被鐵窗切割的光線中，隱約看見了自己被允許的那個出口：穿過一隻狗的眼神，抵達了一切審判之外的寬宥。人們陸續離開，我還站在那裡，覺得那道光好像比剛才暖了一點，不是因為太陽移動了，是因為有什麼東西在佩普的目光里，被輕輕地、無聲地放了下來。我走出走廊時，鐵門在身後發出一聲極輕的響——像一聲被收起的告別，也像佩普在某個看不到的地方，繼續用它不設防的呼吸，舔舐着那些至今沒有被說出名字的孤獨。
